we are looking to go to to Algarve for Christmas, can anyone advise if this destination is a wise choice. Is it very quiet, and is it cold. The hotel we may book is in Alvor (Pestana Delfim)
I'm not expecting warm weather, but what types of clothes will we need for the day time.
And also, can anyone help with the location of the Pestana Delfim, I've spotted somewhere that its on a hill. We are taking the father in law and he gets out of breath walking up hills. If it is bad, is it easier to get taxis/busses, and how much will they cost roughly.
Thanks

I posted the above and not yet had any reply, but I really only need to know about the weather now, as we have booked a different hotel (the Riu Palace, Olhos d'agua)
Just as above, what kind of clothes are we best taking?
Thanks

| Hi, we have been to the Algarve many times in the winter months as we love walking and find the weather is generally dry with clear skies during the day but can get quite chilly at night. During the day if you find a sheltered spot you can sit outside in shorts and t-shirt, but you will need a coat for nighttime. I usually take long trousers for the day too as it is much colder if cloudy with rain, which we have also had here. Have a look on bbcweather.com just before you go as it gives a 5 day forecast.
As you're staying just outside Albufeira you can go to the Old town which has lots of bars and restaurants and is more traditional than the Strip. The Strip has lots of bars and restaurants too and although it is very noisy during the summer months is ok in the winter and you'll find quite a lot of places open here.
Public transport is cheap - buses are only a couple of euros and there is a small train which still runs in the winter between The Strip and the Old town. You're not far from Vilamoura either and again there are buses to get there. Vilamoura has a lovely Marina area with lots of cafes and shops. Hope you are lucky with weather!

| Hi Zola
We too have been to Algarve for Christmas and New Year. The weather has always been good for us. During the day you can walk about with t shirts but chilly on evenings. We have spent many holidays there in different locations and loved every one. We were concidering booking this year for New Years Eve, but have others to consider also. So we dont know were we are going at the moment its still under discussion, but definitly on the list
Have a good time as I am sure you will

| Alvor is a lovely place in the Algarve though it is hilly in the town - we have taken our 86 yr old mother twice and she manages ok. Your proposed hotel is on a hill a bit of a walk from the town (nearer the beach) but taxis are not expensive. We go at the beginning of May - I think in December the temperature is at its lowest for the region.
