Hi,

Where in Austria is best suited to a family with all levels of skier including young children who just need snow to play in?

Try Scheffau with Esprit.
Could not fault them. Wonderful hotel - Alpin and brilliant child care and childrens ski area on the mountain.
Take a look at their web site - you can get cheaper but remember you get what you pay for and we felt the extra money was well worth it

I went to Scheffau too, with Esprit. Wonderful in terms of Esprit, and hotel OK but crowded, but don't think suitable really for a whole family of beginners. Mainly because it's a ski bus to the long and very crowded gondola. I think you can find other places where the ski school is round the corner and only a gondola, or even ski in / ski out. I'd definitely recommend Esprit though. I'd look at Obergurgl, as the Esprit hotel is ski in ski out, and the children can play outside in snow after skiing whilst you're having a beer. Austria is fab though. Ellmau is also very good, if you're not going too late in season. It is low, but nearly ski in ski out, and the beginners lifts and nursery slope are huge, very pretty and well equipped.

We went mid January - reading your post I am guessing that you went half term.
If so that's interesting in itself to me, as this is our last year before our daughter starts school.
We considered half term 2009 for a return but your comments along with the prices have really put us off.
Think we'll keep going in January as this was really uncrowded with great snow and hope that by 2009 our local school still allows children to have 10 days out of term times a year!!

PS If you are thinking of going to Obergurgal next year read the reviews on www.tripadvisor.com first - that was our other option but we were put off to some extent by the comments posted here although a Saturday flight would have been better which is what I think is offered with this hotel.

st. anton was amazng.

there was group of 16 of us, all different abilities.

we went in february half term and the snow was starting to turn slushy, however the variety and ability of skiing is a good mixture.

there is slopes for everyone and if you're looking for somewhere with a good apres ski, this is the place.

we went with mark warner and the staff and hotel were really good, the staff were really friendly and the situation of the hotel was spot on.

deffinately going to return and would recommend it to all.

I can recommend you a lot in Austria =)

I think the best for skiing is Zell am See at the Schmittenhöhe oder near to this Kaprun with the glacier Kitzsteinhorn.

It´s so beautiful there ... this skiarea is not huge but big =)

Another possibility is Saalbach Hinterglemm ... It´s also very nice there... and a very huge skiarea.

I visit Austria every year in my winter holidays. I really love the country and the people are very friendly. Every year I visit a different place because I want to see as much of the country as possible. Until now the place I liked most is Kitzbühel. The surrounding is gorgeous there. Love the skiing resort and of course the nightlife. Also liked St.Anton and Lech.
