thinking of going to the DR next Nov, but keep reading reviews that get me worried about the food hygiene situation. Dont want to ruin a lovely holiday with an upset tum, and if anyone is gonna get it , it will definately be me. It looks a nice place & fairly cheap .

Hi, I've been to the Dominican Republic 3 times and have never suffered from any upset stomach, however I am careful to drink plenty of bottled water, stay out of the sun at the hottest time of the day and don't drink alcohol during the day! Recently I stayed at the Victoria Golf and Beach resort and it was lovely and clean. The food was very good especially in the a la carte restaurant. They do have buffet style meals but they only put out small amounts so it is not lying around for ages getting cold. The cafe at the beach is tex-mex and everything is made to order. The local people are friendly and good fun and the beaches are lovely and clean. There are lots of great trips that you can go on such as white water rafting, buggys, horse riding, boat trips, quad bikes and cable car up the mountain in Puerto Plata. The prices locally have increased quite a lot in the last 10 years, but you can barter and it is still fairly reasonable. Have a look at the hotel reviews.

I went to dom rep this oct, were you thinking of staying?? we stayed in the riu mambo where you have use of 3 hotels. it was spot less. I did suffer from a day of vomitin and runs but i think it was just over load of food and drink which a lot of people do on holiday but find other sources to blame. I know there has been so major problems out there with stomach illnesses leading to hotels being shut down but i didnt hear of another person being ill while i was there. Unlike Egypt where people were walking about clutching there stomachs.

went to the dom rep a couple of years ago, after waiting for our children to get older[8 and 10] over health worries, but i wish wehad gone sooner,we stayed in a "cheap" last minute hotel and it was first class, food cooked in front of you such as eggs and pasta, always clean and the cleaner spent more time in our room than we did.fresh bottled water always there and drinks machines serving all the leading brands of ice cold pop.ice machines filled with large bottles of spring water,in short two weeks,in the cheapest hotel with four of us and no problems,in fact been trying to get back since.i know it is third hand info but our friends have been going twice a year for over ten years, and their only complaint isputting on weight due to the unlimited everthing.their advice to me was to leave the cash, credit cards, and cheque books at home, you don't need them, everythings included.hope this helps and enjoy your hols

well i had a bad experience in the dom rep we were a party of 7 and every single one of us went to the doctor at one point of the holiday due to upset stomachs and diarrehea we were there for 3 weeks,
we went to a 4star all inclusive the food was always covered with flies and even cats!!!!
the only meal that was decent was the breakfast as you could have eggs and omlettes and pancakes cooked fresh
as for the dominican rep itself if you have young children (boys)inperticular be careful as there are prostitutes everywhere i went with my 2 brothers who at the time were 13 and14 they were always getting pestered on the beaches for sex was a really nightmare!

it is a nice country but we saw things that i am not even gona mention on here which is why we would never return

Be sensible about what you consume and in our experience you'll be fine. The DR was terrible some years ago, with 60% of tourists suffering bad stomach upsets, thankfully they realised that this was harming their very important tourist industry and measures were introduced to clean up food hygiene. Of course some still get upset but if you stick to your all inclusive provisions you'll probably not have a problem, even the ice is ok to have in drinks.

Hi, Had a wonderful holiday there last year, food was great, nothing to worry about at all. Would go back tomorrow if we could. Just don't drink the water outside the hotel and remember that includes ice cubes in drinks. Hotels are fine as they have their own water supply. Great weather, great people, most holidays there all inclusive so very cheap. Lovely shopping (u do have to bargain a bit at times). Have a great time I'm envious! Viv
