Hi all,

Me and my OH are off to the Dominican Republic for the first time in September. We're staying at Bahia Principe in San Juan. As it is our first time we have no idea how much spending money to take. We will be there for 2 weeks and are staying all inclusive, however, we will be going out for some meals, drinks, day trips etc etc. Can someone please advise what the average cost of living is like out there and roughly how much you think we'd need, also if you can offer any advice for first time visitors it would be much appreciated!

Thanks!

Hi

Went went to the Dom Rep last May and had a wonderful holiday. A must to go on is the Ocean World trip - it is expensive but it is a day to remember absolutely fantastic. We did the sea lion experience, the shark encounter and the dophin encounter. All were brilliant and trust me the kids will love the sea lions. If this is the only trip you go on it will be money well spent - a day to remember for the rest of your life!

We also went horse riding, but to be honest would not take the kiddies it is a bit hair raising in the mountains.

If you are all inclusive then make the most of the resort you are staying on get involved in the activities around the pool and enjoy the entertainment.

It is extremely hot at the old Dom Rep so make sure you pack plenty of sun cream. There are the usual market traders on the beach ideal for pressies to bring back home with you - but remember haggle with these guys they love it trust me.... we got some right bargains in the end you just have to be pleasant and say too much and they will come down in price.... they shout at you hey Mr Asda price and olla Mr Sainsbury it is quite amusing really..... my old man used to shout back I Mr Co-Op...... lol.... friendly friendly people make the most of your holiday it will be over before you know it......

If you go off complex make sure you are not on your own... it is quite an eye opener and better not go anywhere where you are told not too really.

Enjoy your holidays!

We have been considering going to the dominican republic but we have been worried about the weather, we have been told that sometimes the carribeans weather can be awful (my friend went to mexico and it was awful for the whole two weeks they were there) We are looking at May next year. Does anyone know roughly what the weather can be like in May?? My son will be 8 when we go and I`m wondering if there is much for him to do? He is usually quite happy to play in the swimming pool all day every day but also enjoys joining in with games and kids clubs. We would like somewhere that is quite quiet but maybe easy access to shops (if this is a safe thing to do, I do not want to put my family in any danger) Any advice would be greatly appreciated. We are looking for somewere HOT HOT HOT for next May (ish). Thank you.

We went to the Dom Rep in March 2007. It rained every day after about 2.00 pm, we really felt sorry for the people getting married out there because the travel brochures don't tell you that bit. One day our hotel got flooded out, and the fountains in the hotel were overflowing so they had to drain them out. Also we weren't safe going out and about on our own, so tended to stay in the hotel grounds unless it was an organised excursion. Admittedly we were in the north of the island and the hotel was really good but the weather spoilt it and I wouldn't go back there because we like to go out and about on our own. Hope this helps.
