Am i the only one?

Postby nik999 on Sun Mar 06, 2005 10:45 pm

Last year i had to go to the doctor and was prescibed diazepam, the reason, im scared to death on flying, well not flying, just the take off and landing. I have been to so many places, including australia, but as i get older the more scared iam. Anyone else feel like this, and what remedies do you use?

No, you're not the only one. I'll be flying soon for the 1st time in 9 years and not too keen on the prospect. (putting it very mildly). I don't think I'm bad enough to go to the doctor's, but I have got a definite terror at the thought. I am going to take a couple of trips to the airport by myself to have a look around and get the feel of the place so that it doesn't feel scary on the day. I usually settle for a couple of stiff drinks, but as our flight is in the early morning, I don't think that's an option. Even writing this, I've got that horrible feeling in the pit of my stomach. My fear has spoiled the family's scope of travel for too long, now. I am determined to not let my feelings get in the way this time. The other thing that bothers me is the ear pain. I've tried everything and still end up in agony.

Definately not the only one, I fly regulary and am scared to death of the landing every time but it does'nt stop me flying. No remedies i'm afraid, I just try and read (which does'nt work).

I don't know it it helps any, but the folks up the front are quite keen to be able to walk away from each flight !

I have recently retired after more than 30 years flying the things and I did try quite hard to look after you folks in the back of the aircraft !

If you were looked after, the chances were that I would probably get home too !

Have you tried using the soft faom earplugs you can get from the chemist, I find these do the trick. Used to suffer with terrible ear pain till I discovered these. Need to use them before the descent begins though so best to use too early than too late. Good luck.

Come down to Stapleford flying club essex and take a trial lesson. Once you take control of an aircraft you may feel more relaxed on take off and landing, having a basic understanding of how the thing works will at least make the flight more interesting,oh and if you are feeling brave try the stunt plane, nothing quite like flying upside down over the M25

Its the bad anxiety and sheer terror not ear pain, flight last year wasnt that bad, very smooth, very cramped though, felt like sardines in a tin, but this years flight will be a piece of cake only 2 hours to ibiza.

I agree with g3nie, the earplugs from the chemist are a godsend, sucking a hard sweet helps too, I don't like the take off or landing dont think I'd survive a flight to australia.

Thanx for the ear plug tip - tried them before but maybe put them in too late will try again. Sorry g3nie that I caused confusion.
My son took flying lessons with the Air Cadets and is busy trying to reassure me. And, Meseta, thanks for your assurance, I must admit that a visit to the cockpit did help me on my 1st flight - the pilot said the same as yourself. It's just been so long ago
