| I think there are good and bad points. It's likely there'll be job cuts to remove duplication of parts of the new companies. While this will keep shareholders happy, it's not great if you work for either company.
Every town that has a Thomas Cook and a Going Places travel agents is going to have nervous staff.
On the other hand, it will greatly increase the buying power of the new company and hopefully some of those cost savings will be passed onto the consumer.
If First Choice gets bought then I think you'll see some fantastic price wars in time for next year, all to the benefit of us holidaymakers!

| Hi,
I've just heard about the mere between my travel and Thomas cook and I' worried. We've got £4,000 worth of thomas cook vouchers that we can't use this year - will i still be able to use them once the merger is complete?
Thanks Tammy

| This is excellent news - hopefully the new combined firm will drive poor performing operators, like the trully awful xl airways, out of business. http://www.exhellairways.co.uk. Thomas Cook have a long heritage of good customer service. I think we can look forward to good things.

| Hi tam,
I'm sure your vouchers will be honoured.
First Choice have just announced the mainstream part of their business is no longer for sale, probably down to the fact My Travel and Thomas Cook were the two companies most likely to buy it.

| I can't help but think there will be less choice for us holidaymakers. Now there will be only 3 big travel companies left - Thomas Cook, Thomson/Tui and First Choice. I wonder if they will start dictating where we can and can't go and when.
I know it is easier to book independantly nowadays and we have done this several times ourselves but we have to go in high season this summer so felt it less hassle to book with a big company.

| Mytravel have spent so much time and effort with their On Time Performance and all their staff have worked so hard to promote the brand and it seems a shame that now the Mytravel name will disappear, just around the time that Mytravel is starting to achieve its goals.
As Thomas Cook will have a 52% share and Mytravel a 48% share, it seems worrying that many of the job losses could be on the Mytravel side.
Will anyone buy/merge with First Choice now? - Not Mytravel or Thomas Cook
I think this is a worrying time for Mytravel staff, all the hard work and long hours they have put in to improve the company and now they don't even know if their jobs are secure.

| A narrow market limits choice. The smaller independant operators rely on the charter airlines for seats and when two companies merge they will want to ensure maximum use of their aircraft for their own sales. They are likely to sell some of their aircraft rather than expand. At least with BA starting to fly to some of the greek islands this year we may see the likes of flybe/easyjet etc expanding into the med next year using the vacated slots. Good news for us indpendant travellers but no so good for the package holiday and the owners of the properties who rely on the tour companies.

| Can only be good. After 11 trips with Cooks, I have switched back to Thomsons. Every Cooks flight was 1 to 4 hours late , off hand cabin staff and better deals with Thomson. My last trip to Cuba was the final straw. We could have gone to Australia in the time and the return was delayed by 4 hours as well!! Let's hope the merger is beneficial to all.

| Never mind the mergers...I think its time the public rebelled against the way kids are only kids until they are 12 !!!! Nowhere else are they considered adult until at least 14/16 yrs old...We allow these annomolies to creep in...WHY...John

| Hi all,
I work for Mytravel/Thomas cook.
The merger That has taken place will not affect anyones holiday,
all this will mean is that all agencies will be renamed and branded
'Thomas cook'- Jmc.
All your holiday vouchers will be fine, you will still be able to use them.
The merger will not mean that you will be losing out on all the holiday deals, it will be a bonus for you all as we will be able to give you discounts to match the internet for both Airtours and Jmc now so do not be worried its a positive move for Mtravel and Thomas cook.
:)

| Regarding competition. One of the gripes on here is kids being kids up to 12. Well, where we have booked for Greece next year, my kids can not only go up to 16 (on half board too) but I am allowed to have all 3 of them as kids too. My eldest has always been an 'adult' since my youngest was born. I don't know if its the hotel or the tour operator who decides, but if you want to know the hotel/tour operator I can name it.
I also would like to say that MyTravel, in my experience are not a good company to travel with, I have never travelled with Thomas Cook so I don't know. Thomson have been excellent (so far), so I'm glad they havent merged with MYT.
