Taking Kids out of school

Postby evehoe on Wed May 04, 2005 4:41 pm

First off please don't bombard me with hate mail for my comments. I am a parent and have also paid the increased costs of taking my children on holiday in the summer months. That said, I really just do not understand the mentality of some parents who think they have the God given rights to break the rules just because they want a holiday. Somewhere along the way they seem to have forgotten that it was their choice to have children in the first place. That involves extra costs and sacrifices or did they think they could just carry on as they did before the kids came along. They have a responsibility to educate them and to abide by the law of the country they reside in. When the kids are grown up they will be able to take any amount of cheap holidays. My children are now grown up and I am sick and tired of seeing school age children on holidays abroad during term times. It shows absolutely no respect for the schools or for the children who will suffer when they return.

I am sorry this will probably rub a lot of you up the wrong way but it is an opinion shared by a huge amount of parents who come from a generation when you accepted you had to go without or make sacrifices when you had children - try asking your parents or grandparents. Todays parents - and yes I know I am generalising here - want it all.

The tour operators, hotels, resorts etc will charge a premium during peak times - Its called being in business - get a reality check. If you were fortunate enough to own an apartment or a villa would you seriously let it out at the same rate in peak times as in winter or off peak times - I doubt it.

Stop taking your children out of school and have a bit of respect for them and the schools. It is just a small part of your life to have to go through. I have nothing against campaigning for cheaper deals during peak times, more people should get together and try to use their influence to achieve that. That would be more dignified and worthwhile and would surely earn you the respect of your children.

Can of worms well and truly open..................

It is worth pointing out that parents can only now take their children out of school with written permission from the school itself. If the school has no objection, then I don't see a problem.

Charging a premium during peak times is not business - it's greed. After all, the hotel and apartment owners get the same rate all year from the greedy holiday companies, irrespective of whether it is peak season or not. I know this because I have spoken to people who own apartments in Turkey.

It's expensive enough to take children on holiday, especially when they have this completely ridiculous rule that a child 13 years of age and over is classed as an adult - NOT by the hotel owners, but by the holiday companies!!!!!

How about those parents, whose jobs dictate when they can have their holidays? Is that "breaking the Rules"..or is that allowed.?Or should they leave them at home in term time and swan off on holiday without them.Which has happened.
ag28com has already said this and I agree,If the schools have no objections then so be it.

First of all I agree with those of you who dissagree with children been taken out of school, just so parents can have a cheap holiday. I'm sorry, but those parents who say they cannot have time off in the school holidays is rubbish. We never took our kids out of school to go on holiday, my husband and his work mates always worked out a rota for school holidays, simple, all those with kids had the school holidays, all those without kids went during term time. When our kids finished school, we went during school term.

My parents never ever took us on holiday in School time it was just not the right thing to do when we were children.
If its educational then maybe - my sister has just taken her child to New Zealand for 3 weeks and travelled all over the place but 2 weeks in Magaluf is a bit of a different story.
Everyone wants cheap holidays nowadays - and that may mean puttng your childs education at the bottom of the list - priority parents please!!!!!!!!!!!!!

OOPS! Sorry Mother,my comment about parents not being able to get holidays out of term time was a general comment and not a personal one. However,I'm sure there are parents who are unable to take their hols when they want.
