Travel Insurance and Nut Allergies

Hi

I am currently trying to obtain worldwide annual travel insurance. However, as I suffer from a very serious nut allergy I have found that my premiums are extortionately high (Direct Line quoted �297 just for my part of the insurance, without adding my husband's premium!).

I was wondering if anyone else has had similar issues and if anyone can recommend an insurance company that won't charge the same for my insurance as I could pay for the actual holiday.

I have, for the last three years, had annual worldwide travel insurance with the Halifax and have never made any claim whatsoever. Although they have previously covered me for the nut allergy at a reasonable cost, they now say that they take all medical conditions into account on an individual basis and load the premium accordingly. The renewal premium has now almost doubled since last year and I am not best chuffed.

Any advice gratefully received.

My daughter has anaphylaxis and a whole host of other allergies plus athma and eczema etc and need loads of medication. We went away 2 years ago to the usa and her insurance was �59. This was with barcleys. we have never made a claim although we nearly had to just avoided an 999 (911) job as her med kicked in. We found this a good price. try it. Also the post office is supposed to be very good.

im glad you put this thread. i was diagnosed with nut allergy a year ago when i ate a brazil nut now cant eat no nuts at all. anyway i didnt realise that i had to take out extra insurance for me to cover myself, i only thought my inconvenience was trying to get my epipen on board my flight.

anyway thanks for raising this question i now have to look for insurance for when i next go on holiday if i find some cheap deals i will definately let you know.

Hell, I didn't know about a requirement for extra holiday insurance. I have a daughter with a nut allergy, diagnosed last year in November. I obviously intended to bring the Epipen along as a rule, but didn't know there was a need for addl. insurance

Anyone who is diagnosed with ANY medical problems that need medication MUST advise their insurers, even if its just high blood pressure, you may be covered anyway but your insurance must be advised of the condition.
Please make sure you are fully covered by any holiday insurance, specially for something as serious as nut allergy problems.

Hi

We have not been abroad since 10/05 as my daughter had anaphylactic shock in Cyprus after eating a Cashew nut. Could you advise us on how to be safe abroad when we don't speak the language and don't know which foods could be contaminated?

I have Pistachio & cashew nut allergies. I didnt realise i have to get special holiday insurance for this, but i do know. . . And it is diffcult when going abroad espically when eating out , any one got any tips ?

my tip missy is eat as plain as you can. i know this is boring but its better than having an attack. i'm allergic to all nuts and sesame seeds. its a bummer really i keep away from everything with sauces and sweet stuff ie cakes. but there is one thing i always do explain to the waiter that i must not have anything with nuts as i could DIE. also another good idea there is a site which you can have your allergy translated into that country's language which helps especially if the waiter doesn't speak much english.
