We're looking for somewhere to take our Grandson (11) next August. For the last two years we've taken him to Orlando at the end of May but now his parents have restricted us to one week in August so it's got to be Europe. None of us like just laying about on a beach and don't want to be anywhere that's full of beer swilling football watching typical Brits abroad (no offence meant if this is your thing).
He's very interested in History, especially Romans but obviously Rome at this time of year is out of the question. We've thought about a Greek island but all the ones we have been to in the past have nothing much to do other than sunbathing. If anyone has any suggestions it would be much appreciated.
Where in August?

Re: Where in August?
I would suggest Kos, Rhodes or Crete.
Kos and Crete have loads of Bronze Age ruins and Rhodes Town is a World Heritage site with lots of Medieval buildings.
In Rhodes try to avoid Ixia/Trianda area, I personally prefer Rhodes Town itself.
Kos Town has some marvellous ruins, and you can day trip to Turkey from here or Rhodes Town.
Also Lindos in Rhodes is well worth a look, and a good laugh trying to stay aboard your donkey.

I'd advise you Greek Islands or Turkey in August, if you want to go somewhere with about history. In Turkey I can advise you Kusadasi so that you can see the Ephesus. Cleopatra Island in Gokova is good as well.
In August, both Greece and Turkey would be too hot like 30 - 40 C
