| Hi everyone
Not that I am counting but it is 74 days till I go to the Gran Ventana in the Dominican Republic.
Got my injections booked for the 12th March - so is anyone out there going at the same time or has been recently and has any information on it.
Also does anyone know if I have to take Malaria tablets as there is conflicting evidence on the net some say you do some say you dont?
Also which is best method for money.... travellers cheques etc etc
Anyone with any information would be truly appreciated.......
Anyone else on countdown and as excited as me - drop me a line and we will be counting together.

| Hi Chrissey, our countdown to the Dom Rep is 24 days so I'll let you know all about it (I've lost your email address though). We aren't taking malaria tablets, we know people who've been and they didn't bother. We are taking US dollars, pesos and we'll flash the plastic but if you are AI, you won't need much cash. We get our dollars in small denominations, more for tipping than spending. We found it easier to ask the shopkeepers etc to give us a price in sterling. Hope you have a lovely time .

| hi there
just wanted to say we have neen to dom rep a few times , you will have such a great time . if you buy anything always barter & walk away i know from experience that they will come to give you the price you said , if you are planning to do trips you will get the best deal from the plaza, we did 3 trips for the cost of 1 with the rep on site at hotel. durrassy tours right at back of plaza near road house , he calls himself the king ( very nice man) we paid a deposit & rest on day of trip. the trips we did were paradise island v.i.p. trip(all food & drink included), white water rafting( ah thats brilliant) , quad bikes & buggys (that was class) it was all for $130 dollars. you must negotiate though. i am sure you`ll enjoy it so much . we never took malaria tablets but on our retun home the dr said we should have as its a big risk not to , so its up to you . dollars are best small denominations .the people are so friendly, so welcoming , oh i wish i was back there (lol) we are in touch with some of the locals we be friended & hope to travel again soon to see them , enjoy yourself , its a beautifull place .

| you would be wise to take the malaria tablets because when we visited the dom rep in october we were bitten quite a lot, even though at night they went around spraying chemicals to keep them at bay.also on the beach be wary of the sand flies,my sister got bitten and her leg swelled up she had to visit the doctor antibiotics were give firstly by a drip then in tablet form for 5 days (no drinking lol) but apart from that the dom rep is a beautiful place with fantastic people (just be aware of the lucky lucky men on the beach) and beautiful beaches. when we went we took sterling travellers cheques and dollars, not much money required if al only really for tips, but in the shop on the complex items were priced in euros paid for with dollars and change given in dominican currency very confusing not really sure how much we paid for anything hope you have a great time.

| Hi everyone just came back from Punta Cana beginning of March and we were advised to take Malaria tablets the week before we went, when we were on holiday and for a month after we came back, my husband and daughter were bitten all over, mossie's didn't like me or my son! We just took dollars as the exchange rate was so good, didn't buy much in the resort, but bought cigarettes in the airport as they were so cheap as was everything in duty free as you paid in dollars. Also while we were there the humidity took some getting used to and the heat at night, fortunately the air conditioning worked ok.

| Evening everyone - first time I've ever posted anything. We've been to the Dom Rep 5 times now (North coast - Victoria Golf Hotel). We took malaria tablets each time - one week before, whilst on holiday and then for four weeks on return. My husband also used a stronger insect spray in the evenings as he's more prone to bites. The main advice I can give is please appreciate this is basically a poor country but that the people are SO friendly - be polite and learn a bit of Spanish and you will have a fantastic time! Hope you all have great holidays.

| Hi Chrissey
We are counting down to our visit to the GV on the 7th of May. This will be our second visit to the GV. We would not normally go back to the same hotel twice but after looking at other hotels in north and south the GV seemed to be rated highest for nearly everything.
We are flying out from Gatwick on hopefully one of Thomsonfly's re-designed 767. Fingers crossed the new planes start on time (1st May)!!!!
We took malaria tablets last time but our daughter didnt.... Not easy to get a 2 year old to swallow. We will take them again but to be honest last time we where a party of 5 and none of us got bitten.
Again we will be taking US$ as the exchange rate is so good. We came back with money last time which is a first.
If you need anymore advise just ask.

| Cheers Babyblueeyes.......
it is much appreciated any advice is worthy you know what I mean. Well if you going on 7th May then we will still be there..... just look out for the barmy brummies there are four of us - two couples Chris, Tony Emma and Carl...... you will know Tony he has tattoos on his legs and back and Emma is a really loud blonde...... but we do like to have fun we are nice people really.......... we will spend a lot of time in the pool playing around no doubt.
Look forward to catching up with you thanks for the advice on the malaria tablets - I think it is best to take the stuff. If you have a two year old try the medicine form.... I have to take it because I cant swallow tablets either.... it costs £17.00 for two bottles and that covers you for the week before whilst you are away and a month when you get back. Better to be safe than sorry eh?
If we dont catch up with each other, hope you have a super super holiday.
Take care
Chris
