Hello! :)
Thailand is the great choice for longhaul trip! It was first my choice too :) And although my trip has not very high budget, I don't regret of any spent cent.
My friend adviced me to stay in Green House BBK. Service is just great - not only rooms, but a lot of activities you can order there (both traditional as diving, boat cruises and innovative - puppet shows etc.) And all these great things for great prices ;)
Best wishes for your trip!

Thailand is definetely the write choice! I don't have any particular recommendations with regard to hotels but in terms of where to go, I would say obviously bangkok is a great tourist destination- there you can experience a modern city with night life, great temples, good food, etc. But then I would also suggest vising another area to get a good feel for the country, such as Chiang Mai maybe. For snorkeling I've heard that Koh Kai Nok and Mu Koh Surin are good.
