I want to take my wife and 4 children to New York in september [not over a weekend]. Having not been to NY before or booked a holiday like this before I dont know where to start-High St travel agent, web agents, sites like expedia and lastminute or even whether to book the flights and rooms separately or as a package. Any advice would be appreciated.

I think a lot of people use expedia for trips to New York but these are mainly doing things seperately. The only package deals I remember seeing was in British Airways America and canada brochure a good while back and god was they expensive. You can get bargains on expedia but they are gone pretty quick.
I havent been yet, one for when the kids are a good bit older I think.

I went to New York over Christmas 07 with my other half and nipper (age 7).
To be fair, I did it DIY.
Got the flights from BA in a sale. They were the cheapest at the time.
Booked direct with the hotel that we stayed with as they had a good rate on at the time. It included breakfast for the 6 days we were there.
Transfers are as easy as a pie. The cabs out there from the airport have a standard flat rate plus tolls. It was perfect.
And to be honest, booking direct was cheaper than through a booking agent (obviously). The communication was good from the hotel. I was even asking about menu's for Christmas day and they emailed me them.
Have a good look around for a hotel. We stayed at Hilton Rockefeller Centre. It was an ideal location, only ever a few blocks away from everything.
As you have 6 of you in your party, you may find it difficult to get you all in one room. Unless you book something like a suite... it all depends on your budget.
Just a tad jealous of anyone going to NYC... would love to go back.

Online is best as not many packages are around. You can drop on a good deal..however the cheapest deal i got towards the back end of the year was about 600-700 for 3 nights based on a stay at the 30 30 hotel with flights from manchester with continental. Jet2 are offering a package to NYC for 3 nights from leeds bradford from 699 in december. Bit expensive but if you pick the right time you could probably snap up an excellent deal.
