Security Restrictions At Manchester Airport

Inside information on Airlines and Airports. Had a bad flight? Tell the world!

I am flying to Egypt in about 4 weeks and got my travel documents from First Choice this morning which included my flight tickets. However there was no mention of security restrictions!

So I have checked Manchester Airports website and after a very difficult search found this press release tucked away in a corner of the site.....

QUOTE>>>

Passengers are extremely confused by new security restrictions prompting some bizarre attempts to slip liquids through checkpoints, Manchester Airport revealed today.

Security staff at Manchester Airport say they are still having to confiscate thousands of litres of liquids every week despite repeated reminders of new security restrictions which mean passengers are only allowed to take a small number of 100 mls liquids through security in sealable, transparent bags.

And the rules are driving some passengers to extreme lengths to try to get their over-sized liquids through security in their hand luggage.

Some of the more unusual attempts include:

One passenger was so incensed at having his deodorant confiscated that he proceeded to publicly empty his bladder of liquid in a plastic bag in protest at the legislation
A man with four bottles of frozen water who claimed they were solids and exempt from the rules
A woman who decanted half a 200mls tub of soup into a clear plastic bag in an effort to get it on board the plane
A man who was told he couldn't take through a bottle of vodka so drank the entire bottle in front of security staff. He was later removed from the flight for being drunk
A woman who insisted that her two bottles of wine were not liquid but fine wines.
And one man who was having a can of shaving foam confiscated and protested by squirting it all over the x-ray and barringer machines. The clean-up operation took almost half an hour.
Manchester Airport's Director of Security and Customer Service, Mike Fazackerley said of the incidents: Some of the lengths that people go to are incredible and amusing up to a point, but this is an incredibly serious issue.

The legislation which restricts the amount of liquids, gels and pastes that passengers can take in to the cabin of a plane is in place for very good reason and it is in the interests of everyone travelling to make sure they fly by the rules.

And he added: We do remind people of the rules as they check in, and there are posters throughout the Airport. There are also Customer Service Advisors as people enter the security screening area, reminding people to either check in liquids over 100mls or consume then, but still some people are taking no notice.

We would ask everyone to check the restrictions before they arrive at the Airport and make sure that any liquids they are carrying in their hand luggage is below 100mls and is contained in the right sealable bag.

Confiscated liquids are safely disposed of. Passengers are allowed to purchase larger quantities of liquids once they have passed through security.

From February 19th, passengers will no longer be supplied with free plastic sealable bags. Bags will be on sale in the airport terminals but passengers are being encouraged to either pack their liquids, pastes and gels in hold baggage or bring their own bags.

Thought some of the excuses were pretty funny...what a bunch of plonkers!

But seriously the press release states that "everyone should check the restrictions before they arrive at the airport".

Just where do you find these restrictions listed and what about people that haven't got the internet??? :-(((

Just out of curiosity and purely because I am nosey, I have just checked out the website for Manchester Airport.

It is there Iain. The bright red banner with a yellow warning triangle. "Important Passenger Information." Click on the "Current Security Procedures" tells you all you need to know.

It's not hidden. On the homepage. Can you see it yet?

But don't you think that with the current ongoing situations, that even people without the internet will be aware that there are restrictions in place.?

I have just got my tickets from Virgin and in the welcome pack they arrived in, had the full details for the restrictions. The fact that I need to put liquids in a bag and the size of the bag, what I can and can't take.

Maybe the information passed on varies from carrier to carrier. Thats why people should call the airline or airport. And Yes, I realise this maybe a hassle for some but worth doing.

Bex.

Quite rightly so Iain. You stamp yer feet.

I agree, if it wasn't for our internet at home, my in-laws wouldn't have the full details.

But just think how much money they can reep back by selling those plastic bags eh?

As a worker at MAN airport, ill confirm that clear plastic bags are given FREE OF CHARGE at security checkpoints for now.
As for people who dont have the internet, travel agencies are available to ask about the restrictions, and also signs in the airport terminal. Also at check in you are asked about carrying liquids, creams, gels or pastes. 98% of the time passengers have them but say no.

People will know at least 1 person with the internet as its so widely used now, as we enter a generation of the 'online' check in, in time everything will be computerised or automatically done, meaning my job in time wont be safe.

Flew out of Manchester last week , Was gave a clear plastic bag (free) on the way through at the security checkpoint to put any liquids, gels, creams, paste, - lipgloss, vaseline, perfume etc etc in . But the good news for me this time was that you do get them back , they just go throught the scanner thingy first . . . .

Can remeber going last October when it was high security and i had to throw my mascara, lipgloss and perfume in the bin as you couldnt take any liquids through at all . . . :(
