Fred Olsen anyone?

Hi, I'm really excited about the cruise I've just booked: F Olsen's new ship for 2008 'Balmoral'. We're doing a back to back Caribbean then homeward to the med in Apr 2008 - ages to wait yet! I think I've read that the ship is sailing as the Norwegian Crown at the moment. If so, I've read loads of really bad reviews about it. I'm hoping that Mr Olsen will improve it when he takes it over. We've been on Braemar before , as well as a few superliners but much prefer the smaller ship. I guess I'm looking for reassurance that I've done right booking, given the bad reviews. Is anyone else thinking of booking this ship?::roll:

I noticed your e-mail some time ago and I am slightly surprised that you have not had any replies. I think you will enjoy a Fred Olsen cruise. The passengers do tend to be a bit older than on many cruise ships however, we find that they are generally very friendly ships and cater to a very good standard. The Balmoral will not be recognisable once it has been refurbished and I am sure you will find everything to your satisfaction. Don't worry, you will enjoy.

We just booked the Balmoral for a back to back London to Miami then Miami to Caribbean beginning 2/13/08. Have never sailed with Fred Olsen and we are looking forward to it. Would like to meet anyone else sailing with us.

Fred olsen is my favourite line. The service is impeccable and always comes out top trumps without breaking the bank price wise. We did the caribbean-southampton via the canaries for xmas and new year in 2001 on the black watch and also black prince dec 1998 round the med. I believe one of his ships are completely no smoking, which we will avoid like the plague! I think thats the Boudica?? Not entirely sure though.

Thanks for your comments. Past passenger's experiences are the best recommendations. We do prefer smaller ships at a good price with a nice itinerary and the Balmoral fit the bill for this winter's get-away from the cold in Pennsylvania. Just hope all those Brits and Europeans can understand our accent!!

englishchick - we depart next week on Feb 13 from Dover. When we get to Miami we stay on the ship for the Mar 3 sailing then fly home on the 13th as you begin to board her. Since the inaugural cruise was cancelled we are sure hoping they fix the problems before we board and that we sail on 2/13! I think I saw your posts on CC. I put a post there as well for a roll call and found one person who is joining us in the Canary Islands. Other than that, I think a lot of people must not post here or on CC for this cruise line.

Hope you enjoy your trip. Back now to packing!!

We have been on the Norwegian Crown twice ( soon to be the Balmoral) and we thought it was excellent. My friend and I are sailing out on the 13th of Feb. We only heard today that the first cruise was cancelled !! Keeping our fingers crossed she is ready for next wednesday.
We have been on the Braemar 3 times and also the black Prince..

Hello. Yes, I've booked on Balmoral for the transatlantic/Med in April too, so I'll see you on board in Miama. As we will be staying overnight and there will be a bit of a rush booking trips for next day and in Port Canaveral the day after, I have booked with Fred Olsen in advance for the Everglades and the Kennedy Space Centre. A friend is on the ship now and told me that in Teneriffe there were still about 100 workmen on the ship but they should have finished the work by when we board, dv, otherwise he's happy with it and the food is very good! The shuffleboard court hadn't been marked out yet, he told me. You'll have a tan already! Look out for Mike Hogan, Maggie.

Sorry for the delay, Have only just seen this. Fred Olsen are like Thomson in terms of atmsophere, only a better standard. They market themselves as british, friendly etc. Slightly older age group but guests taht are up for some fun. Have had a few things in the sunday press recentky from cruise.co.uk who seem to have exclusive offers with them. Not sure if they're part of the same company?

HI Maggie, i have only been on one cruse in my life and that was on the Black Prince. My partner came down with Norovirus as did some 100 other passengers. The way that this situation was managed was disgusting, in my opinion, the health of all passengers was copromised by Fred Olsen company policys. My advice to anyone cosidering a cruse would be, "not Fred Olsen". From what i saw, when things go wrong on a Fred Olsen cruse, that impact on passengers, then these passengers are in a very bad place. So please be very careful.
