the beaches in fuerteventura

Hi, we thinking of going on our first family holiday together and was wondering what the beaches are like? From what i've seen on the web they look wide and open and rough! I want calm beaches and they dont look too calm.... are they fairly warm? whats the sand like? and is the water very clear? If you've been to menorca, how does it compare with menorcas beaches? We're thinking either menorca or fuerteventura.. .. I am 4 months pregnant and want to go asap thats why fuerteventura would be an ideal choice as the weather is warm all year round whereas menorca only gets warm from may...

the beaches in fuerteventura

Hi, we went to Flag Beach in Corralejo which was amazing to look at but not so great to sit allday. I found the wind was just too much for my eyes (contact lenses), it constantly whips up the sand, this was also the only day we got burnt. There was a small town beach in Corralejo which was much more pleasant packed down sand but it was very small. I think you may want to look at Lanzarote, the beaches in Playa Blanca are lovely and sound just what you are looking for.

Hi, we went to Corralejo in November and it has a variety of beaches. The sand dunes just outside the town are beautiful soft white sand and wide and long but they are naturist beaches so don't be surprised to see quite a few people with no clothes on! There are stone circles on the beach which you can lie in to sunbathe and these keep out all the wind. The beach near the Riu hotels has sun loungers and umbrellas and no naturists. The town beaches are sandy but smaller and more sheltered and the sand shelves gently into the sea. The sea is very clear but as you would guess not very warm as it is the Atlantic ocean. No naked people on the town beaches! There's lots of cafes and bars and the hotels and apartments are of a general good standard. It's a bit like Menorca in that it's very easy to drive around the island as it's also a quiet island.
We went to Menorca a couple of times when children were younger in May and June to Cala Galdana and Cala n Bosch. In May the weather was ok but the sea was still cold and a lot of places were not fully open so I would not have liked to go there any earlier
If you want calm warm sea and sandy beaches Makadi Bay near Hurghada is lovely.

Hi Glouse

We went to Corralejo last March. As has been said, there are various beaches around the town and some days are windier than others. The resort itself has an old town and some nice Spanish character. Something for everyone really. We swam in the sea in March. It was a bit cold getting in but once in it was fine.

Caletta de Fuste/Costa Caletta is a man made resort on the island with a beautiful man-made sandy beach where the sea is very shallow.

The previous poster was correct in that Playa Blanca on Lanzarote does have a lovely sandy beach, also man-made I think.
You can get a ferry at regular intervals between here and Corralejo

Absolutely not! Whoever calls it that has not been there! Playa Blanca as suggested by previous poster is a small clean resort with 2 lovely sandy beaches, bars and resturants along the shore and a wide paved path connecting both beaches. The island is very easy to get around and the buildings are all white and green or white and blue. Puerto del Carmen is a lot larger and has an old town with harbour and a new town with loads of bars, restaurants etc. Costa Teguise is a purpose built resort but is well laid out and very clean beaches. The only negative for me in the winter is the sea temperature.

Hi Glouse

I would echo most of what Carole says about Lanzarote. It is definitely not grotty.
Personally I would not stay in Puerto Del Carmen. It's a bit overdeveloped and like Blackpool in places. The harbour area and old town are definitely worth a visit though.

We have been to the Canaries four times in March and have never had a problem with the sea temperature. It is not as warm as Greece in summer but not as cold as the north sea in summer. Once you are in you can stay in for quite a while.
Hope you get sorted soon.

Regards, Jean
