Madeira is a gorgeous island and I love it. Been there many times and stayed at the Casino Park, Girassol, Eden Mar and Orca Praia hotels. All good.

In May this year we decided that for a change, we'd try self-catering. Booked these apartments through First Choice Holidays.

Never again:icon_grrs It was one week of hell!!!

1) 3 building sites and 1 new road all being built VERY close to the apartments with all the ensuing noise, dust and traffic.

2) As the apartments are on the main 31 & 34A bus route and situated on a blind bend, you had buses and cars honking all day and most of the evening to contend with.

3) DOGS - barking ALL day and night. It was like B&B at Battersea Dog's Home!

4) Loss of water supply 3 afternoons out of seven.

5) Maid never locked our apartment door after cleaning, mentioned it to the rather surly owner, who suggested we use the safe. Not the point though. Consequently, an elderly couple suffered an attempted burglarly while we were there but they never had a visit from the police, which I thought was rather odd as they said the owner had reported it. Odd.

We moved into the Orca Praia for the second week, which was fine except that there is government building work going on (pointless), which has caused them to lose much business. Shame because it's a nice little place with great staff and management.

Anyway, First Choice, as usual, don't want to know and they've written a couple of silly letters. They charge holidaymakers an absolute fortune but when things go wrong, they're not interested. Needless to say They will no longer have my custom.
