Just bought a new kitchen and decided to do the work my self.... :S
However, am I allowed to cap off a gas pipe myself, or does it have to be someone who is Corgi registered?

Hiya Happy,
Fairly sure that any work being undertaken on live gas, has to be by a Corgi registered plumber, this would indeed include capping off a supply you no longer have need of.

I will still need to use the supply, think that may be the problem as otherwise I would just turn it off at the box outside and be done with it lol, which is probably highly illegal too.
Sure i heard somewhere that as long as it's in your own house the house owner can do it, but if the house doesn't belong to you it has to be Corgi registered fitters. Maybe thats an old wives tale.....

Happy,
If this is just the supply to the cooker this may well be just a bayonet fitting in which case I would just disconnect it. I can still do this when cleaning the tiles behind the cooker in my house.
But Mal 54 will be able to give you the answer as they run a plumbing & heating company. She comes in most days so hopefully will read your post.

Hi Happy,
This is a minefield, Corgi registered people are professional people.
I don't need to tell you gas is dangerous. Unfortunately, that is all I am allowed to say.

in that case, how much do you think it should cost me to get a corgi registered gas engineer to my house to cap off a pipe. The oven does have a bayonet fitting, but the pipe needs to be shortened.
thanks

Hi Happy, I'm not ignoring you.
You can either ring Corgi, who will give you the telephone number of a corgi registered person in your area, or you can go on the internet, go into www.corgi.co.uk. You should be able to get up the names, address and telephone numbers of corgi reg. people. Don't use anyone who is not Corgi registered, there are a lot of cow boys out there.
The problem is corgi registered people have to be registered for each individual appliance. ie. might be reg. to fit a boiler, but not a gas cooker or fire. Cost can depend on the area you live in. Usually around 20 per hour 160 per day. No call out charge. This is a rough idea of what we charge.
Hope this helps you. I will try and find out a rough price for you.
Sorry if this is too late.

Hi Happy,
Sorry, didnt realise they had changed, mind you they are always changing everything. In the long run I think we pay for that when we pay our yearly registration.
Anyway, just had a word with hubby, he said it should cost you about 80 ish. And shouldnt take more than an hour. He said exactly what i said, depends on which part of the country you are.
Good luck
