Telephone scam - beware

I don't know if anyone saw Watchdog last Tuesday on TV, the bit about the telephone scam. Anyway, when we got in last night, I checked the voicemail on the landline and there was a text message asking me to ring 07953 966066 (take note of the number) and to use the landline. Because my son had driven down to London last night and all my family including my elderly father live miles away, although alarm bells rang, I decided to ring the number. Luckily I didn't use the landline but used my mobile and as soon as a connection was made, a voice said 'Welcome to the chat line' I immediately ended the call which lasted about two seconds so beware everyone and take note. I'm now going to email Watchdog to say the scam is still going.

Thanks for the warning Hils. Didn't see Watchdog so wouldn't have been aware of this and I would probably ring the number back as it just seems like a normal mobile phone number.

Yes I agree, the only reason I replied was because it looked like a mobile number, but at least I was on my guard. I've informed Watchdog because I think it's a different number they are using now to the one which Watchdog gave out last week.

People who do this make me really mad as do the people who keep ringing up asking to speak to Mrs Jones and when you say there's no one of this name here they think they can interest you in their annoying sales patter :icon_grrs
They all seem to be getting through even if you block withheld numbers because of the systems they use.

Hi Tezmand, apparently they want you to reply on your landline because that is the number the've flagged up and shows your address. On Watchdog last week, people were ringing the number for about 3 seconds and were getting bills for 12, so I thought if I rang from my mobile, they won't be able to tie it up with the landline. Hope this makes sense.

07953 966066 is the T-Mobile Text to Landline Service. You shouldn't be billed much more than a normal mobile call for this
Google for the number (twas how I found this) and it'll tell you all about it...

Today I had one of these after what appears to have been quite a break in transmission, so am reporting in.
Put phone down promptly, missed the number but 1471 worked. Didn't reply.

These unprincipled time-wasting scamsters are still doing this. I received a meesage on my PlusNet/BT line this evening containing a rather worrying message that made one feel that you should address it even if it had been left on the wrong answer phone.
The message was from telephone 07535 742568 and asked me to call 07953 966066 to reply. I didn't.
This needs to be stopped. I was putting my young son to sleep and they rang in the middle of the bed time story.

They have started with me know. Just the one, however it is the same number and leaving a message please phone 07953966066 from this phone. My landline, I never phone mobile numbers from my land line.
If you do a 1571 you get he same number. Can anything be done about this?
