| The Goan holiday season is about to start and I've heard that the monsoon is finally moving on. Apparently they have had 140" of rain since June!!
I'm booked into the Marinha Dourada for next Easter. I don't want to start counting the sleeps until Easter but I'm very tempted!!
Anyone else booked this hotel? They have a new website at www.madogoa.com and it's so much better than the old one.

| Hi Ian
Marinha Dourada is a large well run hotel, but the rooms are fairly basic.
The hotel is situated in Arpora, about half a mile away from the beach at Baga. The hotel does run a free shuttle to the beach. On a Saturday night a market takes place just down the road, its great fun, has live music with rock bands and food. On a Sunday, if you like music, go further down the lane towards the beach to a bar called Mayona, After 8pm A brit called Doctor Allen performs live acoustic music, and any musicians passing through Goa also do a session. If you are lucky some of the old hippies will be there.
Taxis in Goa are cheap, but nowadays the drivers are getting a bit cheeky. The majority of them now own there own cabs and try to make a killing during the season. You must first ask a price before starting a journey. Hope this info is of use.

| I'm not really into fishing but I will be certainly watching out for that "big one". There is supposed to be an absolute whopper in the lake...maybe hearsay but I just enjoy the walk around the lakes anyway.
I'm really looking forward to seeing all the birds and wildlife in Goa. I spent sometime in Florida a few years ago and enjoyed wildlife in the Everglades.
Hopefully won't see to many aligators though in Goa!!...hehe

| Hi Iain
First time to Goa for us and really looking forward to it. keep hearing horror stories about Monarch flights but as long as they get you there (eventually) thats fine by me!
The MD hotel looks pretty good, I think my boys will be a little disappointed as I lowered their expectations of Goa Accommodation, I think they think they're staying in a mud hut !
I'll look out for the bright red lobster when we arrive.

| Hiya..I've also heard some poor things about cattle class with Monarch but like you, so long as you arrive, it's all part of the experience!
It's my first time to Goa and although my daughter wasn't quite thinking along the lines of mud huts, she was very concerned about wether they have electricity for her hair straighteners!!!
I hope to well over the lobster red stage and be able to hide in amongst the locals by the time you arrive. But I will keep you a cool Kingfisher beer by the bar. If your flight is very late...sorry I may be tempted to drink it myself!

| We are off to Marinha Dourada for Christmas (07). Got a letter today regarding the building work from First Choice. Apparently they have finished the shell of the building and are now doing the internal work. Hopefully they will have a few days off over Christmas!. Really looking forward to going. we have never been so far before so will be a whole new experience.

| Well here we are back in good old blighty and it's freezing!!. Had a WONDERFUL time in Goa, even caught some fish. The hotel is fantastic. Nothing is too much trouble, everyone happy and polite. After a hard days sunbathing on the beach it's like returning to your own private oasis. The food in Goa is out of this world - the flavours are amazing - just remember the golden rules - cook it or peel it, don't drink the local water. They keep all the mixers (tonic etc) in the fridges so you don't even need ice in your drink. We had an excellent taxi driver for the whole holiday and basically went where he recommended - and we were never disappointed. we avoided baga Beach during the day as it was incredibly busy over Christmas with hawkers and went futher afield to Arambol Beach and Morgim Beach - both were very quiet and very beautiful. Good shacks and great food. We are definately going back and will be staying at the Marinha Dourada again. I will post some photos when I figure out how to use the camera.

| Welcome back Virago!
Sounds like you had a great time and now I can't wait til March.
Which part of the hotel did you stay in and how is all the building work getting on next door?
Did you fish in the lakes next to the hotel?
Is the hotel bar busy at night or does everybody go out in the evening?
Sorry.....so many questions!
Look forward to seeing your photos if you suss the camera out.
HW Iain
Oh and okitsme, I had mine to pay today as well!!! I'm now broke but looking forward to a holiday

| Yes we had a wonderful time.
We stayed in the main block overlooking the two lakes. The building work is ongoing and at times it was noisy. The main noise comes from the families of the builders. They live in the buildings as they are being erected and we could hear them doing their washing and cooking and the occasional baby crying. However, this was a small price to pay to watch the sunset and sunrise over the lakes.
We did fish in the lakes at the Hotel and my hubby caught a large snapper, a fairly large mullet and a few sun fish ( I think that's what they are called). The Bars are never very busy. They are open all day and most people call at them at least once a day.The small bar up by the main block is open until 2am and is good for a night cap. Most people do go out to eat and/or drink. We had lunch at the hotel a couple of times and it was very good but you can't beat the beach shacks for variety and price.
