First time to Kerala

We have booked to go to Kerala next Feb staying at the Uday Samudra hotel in Kovalam. While there we would like to visit the Periyar Wildlife Reserve so can anyone tell me the best way to get there and back in a day or is it too far? Also any info about the backwater houseboat trips would be appreciated such as the cost and what do you need to take. Are mosquitos a problem that time of year? Have read that pens and pencils are good things to take for the children and would like to know what other things might be useful. Many thanks.

I have stayed at the uday sumudra twice and I am going again this year, we went on a backwaters houseboat trip to Allepeley and also included a nights stay in Cochin City. which was excelent We had our trip arranged by Laurence from the seagul resturant next to the hotel.
The best way to visit the attractions is by Taxi or book an arranged trip from one of the resturants it will pay you to shop around as the cheapest trips are not always a good choice. Pens and Pencils are ideal things to take, we bought writing books locally in travandrum. there are a few mosquitos I bought some local anti-mozzi gel at spensers supermarket in travandrum.
