| Would appreciate any hints/tips on whether to do organised or go your own way excursions on the Island Spirit itinerary.
The ports are Messina, Naples, Livorno, Toulon and Barcelona.
Dont really want to do all the Island ones, too expensive!!

| Hi- in Barcelona Island usually dock very close to town- about 5 minute walk to the Ramblas. You can get the hop on/ off bus even closer- right outside the port building.
In Toulon we were right in town as well, although I have read others report needing a shuttle bus. There is a little tourist train right outside the building, takes you round town and to the beach which looked nice. The best thing we did in Toulon though was the trip to Aix-en Provence, that was lovely.
There isn't much in Messina, and independent is not easy here. The trips go to Taormina or Etna. There are trains but they don't go right in to Taormina.
Naples- persuade a taxi to take you to the station for Pompeii or Herculaneum. Or get a ferry to Capri from the quayside about 50 yards from the port building. There are also ferries to Sorrento, you could get the train back. Just remember to arrange your return ticket on the way out if you go to Capri, and watch the weather, I wouldn't go independently if there was a chance the ferries might stop running!

| Messina - Dull, dull, dull! An excursion is a MUST!! Having been caught out the first time we stopped there, we opted for the Mt Etna & Taormina excursion which we thoroughly enjoyed. The inclusive meal at Mt Etna was no great shakes but we hardly expected haute cuisine! Weather was beautiful that day so the views are stunning at both locations.
