| I am travelling on the Island Star in June and have read some reviews that hairs straighteners do not work on the ship. This would be a disaster for me! I know you need an American adaptor, which I have. My straighteners, which are not dual voltage, work ok in America so I would like to know if anyone else has had problems. Also has anyone travelled to the leaning Tower of Pisa independantly from Livorno as the trip sems very expensive considering how near Pisa is. Any replies greatly welcome

Some cabins have two sockets 1 with 110volts and 1 250volts Some just have 110. If you get a cabin with 250 you will be ok. If you get just the 110 socket then its raggy hair days afraid. I had the cabin with both so I thought brill, but had to change cabins and was given one with 110 watt, the power is not strong enough. If you need camcorder or phone charging the reception will do it for you.
You can get the bus to rail station then a walk into Pisa, its just off the main street and it only cost you a couple pounds to make your own way as you walk down the main street drop off for a cuppa or a lovely icecraem sundea oooh just delicious
have a great time

| Thanks very much for the info. I have been looking in to transformers to convert the voltage from American to British, but not sure if they will work. I posted this question on another site and they said their GHD straighteners worked, didn't mention what type of socket they had.
When you said you had to change cabins was it because of noise? I have read some horrendous reports about cabins at the back of ship so we are seriously thinking about pre-booking a cabin at the front.
We are quite keen to make our own way to the Tower in Pisa, but don't speak the lingo and usually do organised trips. Is it easy and does the ship give you any information about public transport at the ports of call.
Thanks again.

We moved cabins due to the noise from above, there is their was a table tennis table above us this was where the younger ones hung around day and night. Also their is an open sitting area on the same deck with no carpet so you could here the scraping of the chairs from early morn until late at night.
It was easy too make your way round Pisa, they all speak english. There is also an information kiosk nearby so you can get a map there. Once off the train its just down the road so you can enjoy the scenery as well as you walk. I got a icecream sundea it was georgious all strawberrys at the bottom with lots of Italian icecream cost £4 in the parlour which you will pass.
Have a good time

| Hi
I went on the Island Star last year & took a 100VA step up transformer (USA 110VAC to UK 230 VAC) so I could use my GHD straighteners. This worked fine - I spoke to a few people who had tried to use theirs without & they did not work.
I bought the transformer from Maplins electronics - never used again but thought it was worth the investment. Hope this helps.

i went on the island star last year and there were many girls on board we all struggled to use straightners .. they did work just not very well this is because the voltage was not strong enough .It takes longer for them to heat up and can take alot more time to do.
Hope you have a good time

| I've just returned from my cruise on Island Star and wanted to report that my straighteners worked fine, thank goodness!!! It was the first thing I did when I got in the cabin plugged them in. I don't know whether they took longer to heat up I didn't really notice, but they got hot enough to straighten my thick unruly hair.

thanks

| Hi Zola
Sorry for the delay in replying. Our ports of call were Messina, Naples, Livorno, Toulon and Barcelona. We only did two trips in Messina and Toulon. We went to Mount Etna in Messina and took the organised trip as it is too far from the port to do on your own. The same goes for Toulon as we did the full day excursion to St Tropez and port Grimaud.
In Naples we did the Hop-on Hop-off bus. It cost 22 Euros each and that covered you for two tours, the Bay Tour and the Art Tour which took you round the city. Each tour lasted about one 1 hour 15mins.
In Livorno we got a bus to the train station costing then the train to Pisa. We walked from Pisa station to the leaning tower which took about 15 to 20 mins. The whole trip cost us about 15 Euros for the two of us.
In Barcelona we took the Metro to the Nou Camp Stadium and did the tour which cost us 27 Euros altogether for both of us and we had to pay £2.00 each for the shuttle bus from the ship.
Hope this helps if you need any more info I'd be happy to provide it.

That info is great, we are doing the same trips, so that is really helpful.
We were gonna pay for all trips on the ship, as it's our first cruise, but I think it will work out quite expensive.
thanks again.
