Florence-Where best to visit when there?
We're planning five days in Florence in May or June. What do we really need to see?

Florence-Where best to visit when there?
go in May before all the tourists show up. i was there for 8 days in September and it was so crowded it took the enjoyment out of it.
what to see? DAVID!! at the Accademia...the Uffizi has great works, Botacelli - my personal favorite.
but do not miss the Boboli Gardens at the Piazza Pitti. if you are as lucky as I was, there was NO ONE THERE!!! it was great to escape the crowds. the Ponte Vecchio was body-to-body, literally.
but when in Florence, take the train out to Siena. Even though San Gimignano is also turista, it is wonderful. Pisa is worthy of a day trip also.
If you didn't make hotel reservations yet, a word of warning: unless you like to be awakened by the bells from the Duomo at 7 AM, do not stay near the Duomo. I stayed in 2 places - the one i liked the best is Della Signoria. It is within walking distance of the Uffizi, Ponte Vecchio (to go to the Piazza Pittai), the ATM is around the corner and the staff is wonderful. Reasonably priced for its location. And and internet cafe is around the corner and down the block. Buon viaggio!!
