Madeira Holiday
Hi well you are definitley in the right area of Funchal (the Lido) for restaurants (and lucky you, staying at the Porto Mare!!) Try the Chinese upstairs above Hotel Monumental Lido, very cheap banquet for 2 at about 22 Euros the lot! also there is Paradise, try get a table right on the cliff edge really romantic if the weather is good. Its expensive tho but well worth it.The best restaurant by far is called Solar Da Ajuda.walk past 'Monumental Lido' keeping it on your left then take next left up the hill a short distance and its off the street on your left down some steps. It doesn't look much at all from the outside but i promise you you will have the meal of your life! We saw people who had eaten there EVERY night of a 14 nt holiday!! the staff are so friendly and go out of their way for you nothing is ever too much trouble. They even throw in complimentary liquers...try steak on a stone for an experience! It's not the cheapest but easily the best!! Anything else i can help you with about Madiera my email is graemelister8465@yahoo.com

Madeira Holiday
Hi again tedmac, just thought id tell you that Madeira has no beaches.it's EXTREMELY hilly and the nightlife is VERY low key (no neon-lit strips of nightclubs, and only bout 2/3 'english' bars.Best of all there are very few children even in August and no drunken idiots! Thats why its my favourite place in the world at the moment.
1 more thing, for a view that will take your breath away, visit nuns valley (centre of island) but make sure a visit to Eira Do Serado is part of the itinerary (that is the viewpoint and it is stunning...makes the hairs on the back of my neck stand up everytime i see it) Have fun.
