| Hi there, I've spent a lot of time in Malaysia - including both Penang and Langkawi. If you want real unspoilt beauty I would say don't go to either of them, go to the Islands off the East coast instead - Perhentian Besar, Rednang or Tioman islands are all fabulous. For Perhentain islands fly to Kota Bharu (from KL about £2 with Air Asia) and from there you can pick up boats to the island. But for the ultimate Malaysian islands head to East Malaysia (Borneo) instead, and go to Mabul or Sipadan. You can get a cheap Air Asia flight from Kuala Lumpur to Sandakan, and from there you can travel by car then boat to Sipadan and Mabul. Sipadan is famous for being the best dive site anywhere in the world. Check out this hotel www.swresort.com.
However, if you've really got your heart set on Penang/Langkawi then I would say definitely go to Langkawi rather than Penang. Penang is dirty, polluted and crammed with tourists. Langkawi still has more unspoilt beaches and forest etc. And if you want to go diving/snorkling you can go to the Pulau Payar Marine Park where there is still some remaining coral. Bird watching in Langkawi is fabulous - more hornbills than you can shake a stick at!
