My Profile
| Hi There!
My fiance and I have just got back from Margarita Island today! We had a great time, we stayed for two weeks all-inclusive at the Pueblo Caribe Hotel which is in El Tirano on the north east coast of the island not far from Playa El Agua Beach. The hotel is on its own stretch of beach and has two pools, two buffet restaurants one a la carte restaurant and two snack bars. The food is nice and varied and the bars serve beer wines and spirits and do lovely cocktails. There is plenty of activities at the hotel or you can just laze about by the pools if you wish. Rooms are basic , but clean, maintained daily and are very spacious.
Getting around the island is very cheap by taxi and there are a lot of things to see and do. Plenty of places to go shopping like Sambil shopping mall or the local flea market for bargain souvenirs and clothes. There are plenty of cheap restaurants one of the best is La Mamma's in Juan Greigo which is a lovely fishing village set in a beautiful bay with a marina and beach set against the mountains in the background. There are shops and beach bars which are a perfect place to see one of the most beautiful sunsets I've ever seen. Porlamar and Pampatar are the busiest towns on the island but beware of carrying a handbag or wearing lots of jewellry when out shopping as muggings do occasionally happen.
As for excursions there are loads of great things to do in and around the island. We went horse riding, swimmong with dolphins (which was very cheap at around £30 per person!). We also went on a jeep safari which took us all over the island seeing some amazing sights, with lunch and hotel pickups included in the price. If you want to go abit further afield there are also some great trips to Coche Island, Los Roques and Cubagua which are some smaller islands near Margarita or if you are really brave and want to go climbing through waterfalls and trekking through the jungles you can take a two day trip to mainland Venezuela's Canaima Park and Orinoco Delta where you will see the towering Angel Falls and you can go piranha fishing and see crocodiles, monkeys and all sorts of wildlife. It is about £220 per person but you get a once in a lifetime experience plus flights from Margarita and overnight accomodation and hotel transfer are included in the price.
Thats enough about the island but just a few words of advice to consider before you book. Its not a place where people live in luxury most people live in shacks on messy streets which look like Beirut, but most of the locals are quite freindly and a basic knowledge of some spanish goes along way! And also as I say take care when out of your resort with personal belongings. You should have a lovely holiday as we did if you follow sound advice and stay safe. Also when out and about shopping or getting taxi's don't be afraid to haggle for best prices as some may try to rip you off.
I hope my information is useful to you and hasn't put you off in anyway as i'm sure you will have a nice time. My fiance and I enjoyed ourselves so much and met some new freinds and are even thinking of going back next year.
Anyway have lots of fun and enjoy!!

| i agree wqith debbie, margarita is a great place to visit the people are really friendly.do not go off your site wearing a lot of jewellery and always haggle.we have beeb twice once in 2004 october and 2006 in september both visits very good.when we went in2006 a taxi driver was murdered trying to protect a holiday maker who had gone out wearing a rolex watch but this is a very rare thing to happen.the locals are very friendly and helpfull. if you go with first choice look out for carlos one of there reps he is great very helpfull.go to the market for your souvenires as you will get some great bargains.make sure you take a drink with you as it gets very hot,its best to go straight after breakfast.have a good holiday

| basically common sense is all you need my husband and i walk about in the mornings with digital cameras and camcorder. Do not flash expensive jewellry about when you go out as in all countries can be a red flag to a raging bull. just ensure you keep a strong hold on all equipment just to be on the same side. We went to pueblo 2 yrs ago and are going back in 3 wks. M.I. i find is less intimidating than the Gambia and i have been there twice the locals they will try to sell you something you just give a polite no gracias and they will be on their way no hard sell as in africa and asia. When i was there in 2006 a young couple had their binoculars stolen at the front of the hotel but the strap was loosely on their shoulder not tucked under their arm this is where the common sense prevails. Take a look at all of the postings and make up your own mind my first trip abroad was Sri Lanka and i was married there that was a shock to the system as never been out of the uk before. This is South America relaxed and friendly just like Spain. A phrase book will be requiered as English is not widely spoken in South America the locals enjoy teaching you Spanish and they are happy for us to teach them extra English. Enjoy your holiday i will post a review again after i get back from M.I. Just remember if you have been to Jamaica , Barbados etc this is not like superclub breezes but you will enjoy. take care julie
