Mauritius and kids

Hi

after holidaying in Spain for last 8 years we have decided to go further afield so I can do a spot of scuba diving.

Have heard good and bad reports about Mauritius:

We want some where that is safe to walk and explore with the kids. Definatley don't want to be tied to the hotel and we are not "all inclusive" type people.

We want to be able to do all the things you can do in Spain, like walk to nearby by town have lunch, hire a car explore some of the islands history.

Any advice geatfully received
