Hi, please go ahead and book your holiday. NYC is totally fab for everybody. I went april 06 with my husband , my daughter aged 4, a 12 week old baby daughter plus my 13 month old son!!!
I've been back 3 times since, the last time feb 08 with my 12 year old daughter too (plus my mum and another one of my friends)
Obviously , it was hard that time in april 2006, the weather was really hot and i had to go out and buy the kids some summer clothes as i had brought the wrong stuff..typical me!! I don't regret it though. Look , if i can do all that then you will be fine with a 1 and a 4 year old. There's loads to do.....Central Park is HUGE and it's fantastic. There is the zoo there too. Take the kids to FAO Schwarz toystore, the cafe there is great. I go there even when i go to NYC without the kids!!
Everything is quite accessible so it is easy if you like walking!! You could take a trip to Woodbury Common from the Port Authority Bus Station with the kids, it's a shopping outlet, only about an hour away.
I have so much to tell you but do not know where to begin....all i can tell you is that YES IT IS DO-ABLE. There are a few years between your kids , there's less than a year between my youngest two. I am going there again with the youngest two in June and i can't wait!!!
As for the flight, time flies, we haven't had any probs....your kids should love it, just don't worry about the jetlag either, it's only 5 hours behind there . You might feel it a bit when you return but after a sleep you will be fine. Infact when we returned in feb, we went straight to bed for a bit, woke up and felt normal again!!
JUST GO FOR IT.....sorry i wasn't more helpful with the what to do guide etc but i just wanted to let you know that if i can do it, then anyone with their eyes shut can do it, and i keep going back for more!!
