Hiya Caz and Des
Not sure about where you are going, but we normally take cash and travellers cheques in Euros. The cash is handy in case there are no cash points to change travellers cheques (which is unusual in tourist areas or hotels).
The travellers cheques are recommended by the travel agents and we normally get American Express cheques which appears to be most widely used (I think) If you loose them or if they are stolen, then they tend to be covered and you can be reimbursed to their value. Also if you do not use all of the travellers cheques we tend to keep them for our next holiday. They do not go out of date and can be cashed in at any time.
Hope that helps. Enjoy your jollies!!

Assuming you are in the UK then take sterling travellers cheques as most banks don't charge for issuing and you can pay the balance directly into your account on your return. If you purchase Euro tc's you will get a much lower rate when you try to cash back in any excess on return.
As others have said, exchange rate tends to be better in resort.

Unless there have been major changes recently this advice is totally inaccurate. Last time we were there the exchange rate for cash and travellers cheques were exactly the same. That has been true everywhere we have travelled in europe. No commission charges on either method.
The only part I do agree with is to get a safe. It doesn't generally cost much and peace of mind with the security of money, travel documents and passports is certainly worth it.
