| We've booked a holiday for 11 members of the family to go to Port El Kantaoui staying at Hotel Golden Soviva in May. I've read mixed reports - some people say it was a holiday from hell, others love it. I'm really worried and need to know now if I should change the hotel?

| Hello
my husband and i stayed at the Royal Salem in souse a couple of years ago
that's not far from where you'll be staying the hotel's are fantastic the food second to none the only thing is you're better off going about with the repps rather than on your own we would normally do our own thing but there is a lot of poverty out there, on the hole we had a lovely holiday and would go back annette williams :)

| :icon_grrs sorry but you can go out and about in Tunisia perfectly well on your own. We have been for over 12 years now, we never go anywhere else. We have never seen any Tunisian being anything else but friendly to tourists-and we have seen some very rude tourists. Yes there is poverty, yes there are unfinished bulidings, yes it is dirty in places but it is Tunisia and it is in Africa. A lot of people go there and because it is on the med and has some excellent 5* hotels people compare it to spain etc.
Rant over.

| Hi,
I have done some research for you and it seems very nice and the reports I have seen reflect this and are mostly good-excellent for Airtours. I presume it is Airtours you are travelling with? Here is a guide to the hotel from MyTravel/Airtours:

| just returned from Port el Kantoui myself - other than the freak weather we had the location was fantastic and seemed good for groups, families as well as single people.
People from the hotel next door to ours moved into ours because they weren't happy in theirs (strange as theirs was 4* and ours only 3*) and one couple unhappy with their room in ours was moved immediately so seems to me that the Tunisians do their best to please.
Only thing to be wary of - don't get ripped off by jewellry makers and do try the irish bar in sousse, only 5 dinar in taxi from port el kantoui and they have karaoke! - love irish bars abroad, nothing quite like em.
enjoy

| :thumbdow: been to tunisia only the once thankfully. we stayed in sousse. it was a short taxi ride to the port from there. i was sixteen and i was frighted. men chased me along the beach outside my hotel. it got to the point i was scared to leave my hotel room. and i could not sit around the pool ( luckily had my radio and also plenty of books to read). the hotel bar was full of local men trying to buy alcohol because outside was dry. i thought overall the standard of my hotel was terrible as it stunk of cats urine. my family tried to get a move but the rep told us it was impossible because it was an extremely busy time after xmas. i can't remember the hotel name it was a 3*. food in the hotel was equally as bad as outside. i went into sousse centre and there were ladies shakled together. that was eleven years ago and i vowed never to go back. even if it was free :thumbdow: i have just asked my dad and he said it was the hill diar

| My honest opinion dont believe what you read. I am a travel agent and I have also been to Tunisia 3 times and stayed in Souse and PEK. There was bad reviews regarding the Soviva but they have polished up their act. I have had no customer complaints. Infact whilst I was in egypt I met a family who are going to to the Soviva as they enjoyed it so much. Go with an open mind and you will have a good time. The first time I went was with my mother and we went everywhere. If we got hassled a firm " No Thank you " was enough. The local men who drink in the hotel bars are there for lonely women and young girls who want to have male company and buy the men the drinks all night. If they approach you at the bar and you show them you are not interested they leave you alone. Hope you had a great time we did. We also found the Bedowean Feast and the 2 day safari value for money.

| Hi
I have been to Tunisia before and I am going to this hotel in May. I have read a couple of bad reviews, but these were from a long time ago and the most recent ones praise the hotel etc. Try looking on tripadvisor.com as the reviews on there put my mind at ease. Port El Kantaoui is beautiful and alot of the shops have fixed pricing, so that you don't haggle. I have been out on my own, and you do get hassle, but as you said there was 11 of you, I am sure that won't be a problem.
My sister has never been abroad before, and I am taking her here, so it can't be all that bad can it?
Hope this helps.

| I am gob smacked at what I've read! We have just returned from our second visit to Tunisia. We stayed in Yasmine Hammamet last year and Hammamet this time round.
Last year - Almaz Hotel, this year - Hammamet Garden Resort. Almaz was smaller, but Hammamet Garden had the best staff.
Anyone who says this is a scary place, wants to go 'real' travelling. Some who say they saw poverty should go to places like The Gambia, where we had a great time, but were not shocked by the poverty as we were prepared.
The people in Tunisia are fantastic and I would definately return. We are not really a couple who like to go to the same place more than once or twice, as we like to see as many different places as we can, but this place is different.
Please don't be put off by some reports........and have a great holiday!

| i went to hamamet a couple of years back and although its the quieter end of tunisia and we had to travel to do most things it was an amazing holiday, the food was great as were the people and it was my most enjoyable holiday. Im going back in January this time to souse and I cant wait. Another thing we stayed in apartments which were described as 3 star but it was more like a four or five star which is a them which runs through most of the hotels in tunisia

| Hi My family of 4 went to port el kantoui Tunisia and stayed in the hotel golden soviva over new year, as it was new year we had a gala meal put on which was ok but very welcoming. The staff are lovely an are always there to help and to entertain you and your children. Overall the hotel was ok but just ok there was many of better hotels around in the area. The area of the hotel is quite good but you have to catch a taxi to most places but it is quite cheap. The pool main however was freezing cold so every time we got in we where forced out again with the chill of it, and the slides where not on once. The entertainment was good on some nights but actually quite poor on others. The harbour which in a taxi you can barter for it at 3 dinar was brilliant there was lots of shops and the food and drink was fantastic. The food in the hotel i had mixed opinions on there wasnt much of choice for the kids and mainly catered for tunisian food the though desserts where lovely. You cannot get beer on draught only in botles. I would not reccomend the hotel over the months we went in but we thought maybe it would be better in the summer season i would also try a different hotel to that one.

| Port el Kantauoi is a lovely place & its a nice walk to the Marina. Taxis are cheap about £3.00 to Marina if you cant be bothereds to walk but they have horse and carriages which are a bit dearer and the little Tuk Tuks Its a very clean and new looking man made resort . We went first time about 10 years ago and loved it, been back quite a few times and still has its charm.
If you call in to suse their is a large shopping mall that sells everything at afix price but cheap.
The people are friendly and like to chat with you. Have a great time

| I know it's sometime after but, Never stayed at Port el Kantaoui however I have visited it on many occasions, very clean, almost clinicaly clean, the port area is stunning, prety much the same as any Med port, lots of expensive sailing yachts. This is the place if you want a boat trip, Yellow submarine, not really but you sit so far below the water line that you get the impresion of being in a submarine, great value for money. Fishing trips are also available from Port el Kantaoui, probably better off checking first if this is your thing.

| Over the years I've stayed in the Mouradi Palace, the Marhaba Palace and the Royal Kenz. Word is that the Kenz is the best hotel in PEK now. They don't allow children under 16 and it is a taxi ride away from the Marina. The Marhaba Palace, I think, wins hands down. It's location, staff and food area all great. I think, in general, Tunisia is a place you either love or hate! I loved it so much I bought a house there!!

| We have only ever stayed in PEK and we also love it. It was debatable whether to go and celebrate New Year there but we tossed a coiun and the Algarve won.
