Ear Infections

reading many comments on this hotel i would recoment taking a trip to the doctors befor leaving england and ask for antibiotics to take with you its very exspensive to see a doctor in this hotel 40to 70 pounds ...you can go to a chemist but the nearest town is 30 minutes drive to nearest chemist...........you are in the middle of know were when it comes to finding a good chemist which has better medicene than at home.......i would rather pay a charge at home than pay this sort of money you can not claim on your insurance because it takes the first 50 pounds off so beware...............

ear infections

I have been keeping up with the reviews on this hotel as we might go there next year and thought the same. General opinion is that its a good hotel, most people give it a 10/10 but lots of people mention ear infections. Not sure if a doctor here will give you antibiotics in advance though.

Ear Infections

joejoe,
If it helps, we always go into town and ask for 'Augumentine' over the counter at any pharmacies all over the world. It is the generic name for Amoxylin and is in pill form and comes in cards for one week dosages. Been using it for many years and have never been not able to get it. The only place you can't get it over the counter without a prescription is UK - but then again the doctors are overworked!!

ear infections

Postby chirpylite on Tue Aug 14, 2007 7:27 pm

Hi,

I'm a nursing student and mentioned my concern regarding ear infections on holiday whilst I was out on practice with a Nurse Practitioner. He advised me to get some acetic acid in a spray from the chemist before I go. It apparently prevents the ear infection in the first place. Also, shaking your head vigorously (like a dog) when you come out of the pool ensures all water escapes from the ear canal and so does not provide an environment for bugs to breed.

Hope this helps, i'm going to give it a go.

What is Amoxylin ? Do you mean the anitbiotic Amoxicillin. ?

Theres lots of different types of Antibiotics, and only the doctor should prescribe them for you. This is becasue Amoxicillin may not be the right antibiotic for you or for your infection. So therefore they would be not point taking it , plus with antibiotic resistance increasing it wouldnt be a good idea. Best thing to do is try to find ways of prevention take some painkillers incase youdo get a ear infection. Not all ear infections need Antibiotic treatment. I doubt that the doctor would prescribe you some before your holidays espically as now days where they avoid the use of Antibiotics for minor infections, to help give the body a chance of fighting the infection and buliding some resisitance to it.

Last time i had a ear infection i got those drops of the dOc , then after two weeks i still had it , so then she gave me Antibiotics. So maybe , you might be able to get the ear drops to take with you.

Hey MissyJ(TopDogGroupie), er...calm down! You say tomatoes, we say tomatos - check the western seaboard commercial brand name of amoxylin, a product name of the genus amoxycilline (note there is an i/y conflict there too). Pre-med at Ruckers howaboutyou?

Joejoe, ear infections generally arise from prolonged bathing or protracted periods in water deeper than 2 meters (kids will frequently dive to the bottom of the pool and valsalva (equalise pressure) on the way down. Water then gets trapped between drum and wax on ascent and therein lies the problem. Do all that's been advised, keep the hygene levels up and turn over/round pillow cases - another source of trouble. Other than that - go with God. 10 Dorrar fee pse!!

Ear Infections

Postby STANLEY123 on Mon Sep 10, 2007 2:34 pm

i have heard that the reason there was an outbreak of ear infections this year is due to the heat - apparantly it was so hot that the chlorine in the pool was evaporating, hence no chlorine water is open to infection - what with some people weeing, spitting in pool infection will be rife - having said that i will go prepared with antibiotics.

the stuff about the heatwave causing the ear infections is rubbish - do all the hotels in the caribbean suffer from massive amounts of guests getting ear infections in high season? No.
it's because they don't check and/or put enough chlorine in the pool.

i have to say i totally agree with you, yes the chlorine was evaporating in the heat, but as you stated they should put more in.
