Overweight luggage scam at Sharm airport

I must admit when we went to Sharm we did'nt have a problem with overweight luggage, this was a few years ago though. Although, in Sharm airport a guy was standing at the check in desk, took our luggage off us to be weighted, then put out his hand, obviously wanting a tip, to which my husband ignored.

So maybe because they didnt get away with this scam, this over weight luggage is a new way off getting money out of people.

Just beware.

hi ... read your account of what happened at Sharm with interest ...
I have just returned from Sharm and was supposedly 50KG over weight to which i got charged 300GBP!!!! on the spot. Yet when we initially checked in at manchester 2 weeks previously no one mentioned we were so dramaticaly over weight....which we were not

We certainly didnt buy anything heavy to increase the weight by double so I too am convinced we were scammed .. My partner complained to Thomas Cooke who said that the staff at Manchester may have been leniant with the weight and allowed it to go through
( likely story) and if we brought a complaint then we may get charged retrospectively for the outbound trip as well. So its a case of they are always right and the customer is always in the wrong and we are supposed to believe their excuse of being charitable rather than hear a better explanation of why the weight wasnt over at Manchester yet it was double the alowance when leaving Egypt at Sharm airport

You were conned
The average weight allowed is 20kg + 50kg overweight your suitcase must have weighed about 12 stone and i bet you lifted it onto the scales one handed.

Theres no way i would pay 300 bit much in it . Your cases would be overloaded to have that much overweight

Can I just reassure those who are watching, but not posting...

I have been to Sharm twice. Once as a single lady traveller, then with my partner and three children. Both times the guys at the weigh-in didn't look at us twice! In fact, on the way into Sharm on my own I had to pay 54 excess baggage charge at Manchester because it was so heavy - I then went and shopped like crazy and they didn't bother charging me on the way home. I surely must've been severely over the limit.

Although I cannot say if this 'scam' has started in the past ten months since my last visit, my previous experiences have been positive - but dull ;)

Personally I think If they are gonna charge you for being overweight they should give you money back for being underweight too!
Its like them new Car park machine with the registration thing, the space has already been paid for, the same as someone having underweight luggage has paid for your luggage being overweight.
We are always under but the day we are over we cant say what about all the times we were under can we.
Basically maybe we should all wear shellsuits etc and look poor then maybe they wont try it on.

I paid 70 for extra weight before leaving manchester as we took our baby girl who didn't have a luggage allowance. We didn't pay for extra on the way home and didn't get charged at all.I know we used some items but were definately over.I just think it is the luck of the draw.

We have recentley come back from Salou and was told one of our cases weighed 17kg and we would have to pay an excess baggage payment of 30euro. We tried to tell the woman the first case she had put through was still half on the belt, but fell on death ears claiming we couldnt share the weight. We told her to put the first case through but she put both through and gave us a slip and informed us we couldnt get our cases back and to pay the money then go back to her for our boarding cards. On arrival over here we got an independant witness who agreed we never opened the cases once removed from the belt and all cases weighed under the 15kg.We now have to write to Ryan Air to complain. BEWARE
