Not that anyone would want to see my knees, but they didn't get covered once in the two weeks I was in Egypt.
Sorry....that sounds like an old wives tale so to speak!

Now we're all curious about your knees Iain.......?
It's really only out of resort (eg Cairo, Luxor) when it's advisable to cover up more or you'll be stared at, especially if you're female & blonde. I even get some Egyptians who want to touch my hair, to check it's natural : 0
Most hotel restaurants will ask the men wear full length trousers in the eves.
A friend who posts on another forum witmessed a scantuily clad lady ("spilling out" at the top & below her shorts, so to speak) be hastily covered up by a long gown, rushed over to her, in a restaurant in Na'ama Bay, but generally speaking, Na'ama Bay restaurants are used to "all sorts". I do wear shorts & vest tops in resort, but cover up more outside of Na'ama.
If visiting historical sites, many of which are temples / mosques & places of worship, covering up is essential & respectful of present & past religious beliefs. Men's knees may also be required to be covered then too.
So come on Iain; plz describe your knees : )

It's not really a matter of being "allowed", it's a matter of how much attention do you want to attract? The less you wear (even if nothing is said) the less respect they will inwardly have for you. They already perceive western women as easy....we go over there with boyfriends as opposed to hubbies, p*rn comes from the west, we wear strappy tops & shorts.....you get my drift? Not saying any of that is wrong & I wear a bikini around the pool & private beach (wouldn't wear one on the public beach) but I always cover up when I go up to the bar or go to speak to a waiter. I can see you're blonde, so you will automatically attract attention for that. It's down to whether you're comfy with the attention or not & if you care about gaining their respect; remember, the staff in hotels are male.

I stayed at the Coral Sea earlier in the year and although there was nobody from the UK wearing thong style swimwear, there were lots of overweight Russians wearing them!
