What to do in Sharm

Anyone can answer this as my wife and I have no idea what it's best to do on a 2-week break in Sharm!

We particularly want a relaxing holiday, hence we are considering an all exclusive break. I personally can be bothered with all the aggrovation of walking past bars and restaurants - I experienced it in Turkey and I hated it!

We particularly want a hotel on a beach (and not a shuttle service or crossing a busy main road). We like walking but that may be out of the question in the middle of August due to the heat.

We are late 40s and not clubbers, and all that malarkey, but enjoy a drink and a laugh with fellow holiday makers - not being xenophobic but preferably from the British Isles!

There are so many what look like nice hotels to chose from - can any be recommended or better avoided?

I would avoid All Inclusive as these hotels attract Russians & you've said that you'd prefer one with Brits. I don't know of any that are mainly Brits & not AI. Folk who go AI often say that the food becomes boring & repetative.
We like the Jolie Ville Resort & Casino, in Na'ama. We don't have to bother about taxis & once inside thehotel grounds, it's very private & you can forget about the hustle & bustle of Na'ama Bay. If you click on my profile, you should be able to access my review to see if it would suit you. WE only ever go B+B & have seen 1 or 2 Russian families there at most. There are Italians, Scandinavian, French, a few German, Brits, Swiss & Egyptians there.
If you don't like the sound of JV them your option is to stay further up the coast in one of the bays, but I don't know much about hotels along there or what their beaches are like & what the guests are like.
In Na'ama there is the Tavern Bar, a British pub, but we haven't been.
Check out the Tips for 1st Timers for more general info & a link to the map of the area.

I hate to say this to you but me my husaband and our 4 yr old son went to Sharm in 2004 and hated every minute of it, Shram is basically built on old army barracks for the sole purpose of tourist everything is expensive i.e food, drink and souveniers and there really isn't very much to do at all. We went on one excursion which was the glass bottom boat trip which was ok but nothing to write home about and to be honest 2 weeks was just too much we stayed at the Sonesta Beach hotel and everyone we spoke to had got really ill and funilly enough so did we with food poisoning. By the way don't see a doctor over there they tend to think a needle in the bum of god knows what will cure anything oh and they charge you £25.00 for it. I'm sorry I can't say anything nice but all I can say is avoid Sonesta Beach or Sharm all together if you can, have you thought of Hurgada my sister went there and thought it was lovely and relaxing anyway goodluck and hope you find your perfect holiday.

yorkie.

try looking at the novotel beach, i'm there in sept, sharm is made for the tourist, it depends on wot you want out of a holiday, if its sun and relaxation and a few trips, go for it, as for expensive, sorry its NOT, the food is cheap, drinks on par with here but there are happy hours, buying bits and bobs for auntie well just barter!!!! Want expensive go to the eurozone.

as for getting hassle from vendors, a polite not interested is all it takes, passing a resturant, just say you have eaten, its not that bad.

Agree with Salty Sea Dog...expensive? Def not! £10 for lobster at several different restaurants (for eg) is not dear!
Yes, it's a man made resort & yes, it's very different from Europe, so it's not for everyone. It can be quite a culture shock as can going to Cairo / Luxor as they're the "real" Egypt, unlike Sharm.
I've heard that the Iberotel is quite nice too. Sonesta is full of Russians & I know people who have also had bugs when staying there; I suspect it's AI!

Deal all

Many thanks for the feed back.

I'm still not sure what to go for...only ever done one AI in Majorca and we got fed up with the food then - buffet after buffet. However did not experience any tummy bugs! Tended to find we drank water all day and evenings alcohol consumption was reduced by the slow bar staff!

It's our first holiday without the kids, and to be honest we have always wandered out of an evening and found somewhere to eat and drink.

What are the costs like in and around Sharm - let's say a meal and a bottle of wine? A couple of cold beers? A coffee? Do you haggle in restaurants too? How much is bottled water?

I like to know these things so I know how much money I need to take with me! Do they readily take Visa & Mastercard in restaurants?

Keep it coming - marvellous stuff!
All I need now is to bump into Rupert Lowe and my holiday will be complete!

We go on the assumption of £50 a day for the 2 of us, thats water thru the day, snack at dinner time, its hard work sunbathing! a meal thats not including a starter or pud as its so hot my appertite goes, meal cost is anything from £5-£10 a head i'd say, some resturants are very very cheap, some are very cheap, i'm sure you get the picture. Drink is a little bit cheaper than here, but look around as a lot of bars do happy hours, i worked out you could happy hour for at least 4 hours an evening wey hey.....hic

below are the place i have eaten.. the food that is!!

Dananeer: good for steak and fish, Air con inside so won't get hot and sticky! never had a bad meal there.

Kanabesh on the beach: good for steak and fish, you are on the beach, can pick the fish you want to eat (already dead!).

Gharzala beach: we stayed at the gharzala last year and ate here about 4 times never a bad meal, can pick your fish out from the counter, also you get entertainment, also between 18:00 and 21:00 happy hour, buy one get one free, now be aware here if you order a beer, a rum and coke you will get two beers, two rums and two cokes.....hic!

Jolly Villi Seagull: Bit more expensive than the first two but the food is really good, food from around the world is served here, the ice cream is out of this world. If i remember correctly there is a happy hour between 21:00 and 22:00 cocktails half price......hic! Beware if eating and you order drinks within the happy hour and you are sitting outside watching the entertainment you will get charged full price.

Lido On the deck: This is the most expensive (when i say expensive this is compared to other normal resturants in the area, still cheap compare to back home) this is the place for that romantic evening, eating under the stars, gazing into each others eyes then looking down into the sea beneath you and seeing some big ugly fish eat some poor unsuspecting minnow, yep couldn't get much better romance for the lady and horror for the bloke! yep you will be able to see all the fish as the sea is lit up.

hope this helps

We were in Sharm last April. There are plenty of Bars and restaurants in na'ama bay and would suggest you avoid AI like the plague. We stayed at the Halomy hotel and didn't relise that you culdn't get drinks before 11am, not even a glass of water and in 40 degree heat is not advisable.

They do good food at reasonable prices in the Camel Bar which has a lovely roof terrace to sit relax and watch the world go by.

There is a lovely Restaurant in the Hyatt Regency, which is a stunning hotel, but is a shuttle service into the town.

I ouldn't be put off by the people there, they do not grab you like Turkey, and if you give a firm but polite No Thank you they most certainly leave you alone.

Hallo,

I lived in Sharm 3 years, and form me your question is realy difficult. Please go to Santa Cathirina but by car please not by bus. When you rent a car with a driver you can see realy everything by your self. Desert its sometihing amasing. You can rent a car in Avis, Sharm Lizumin or in New castel Mustafa Elnagar its is phone number+20102607234
