Aaaaaaagh!! is self-catering & skiing for beginners possible

It seemes simple enough - finding an 'all in' skiing holiday for beginners (for winter 08/09), staying in self-catered accommodation. We are a family of 6, but all adult (17- 50 age range). All the brochures seem to be for catered/half-board accommodation, or small self-catering apartments or chalets. Austria sounds nicest location, but can't find the right package. Switzerland sounds expensive.
Any ideas where I can look?

hi, if self catering is for you i would look at FRANCE as they cater for larger groups just make sure you choose a high resort to guarantee you snow, crystals has a wide variety of accomodation in all resorts tignes, val torens, la plagne etc there are loads of choice if you really want austria then you are best off looking at tourist information websites in resorts and book seperate flights, car hire/transfer and accom, just make sure you book in a high altitude resort minimum 2600m hope this helps

As long as you do your homework on where is suitable for beginners - and I'd recommend ELLMAU, in Austria, as nursery slopes near rest of town and the rest of mountain as you progress. Also very nearly ski in/out, which is nicer, but not essential. Once you've decided on the resort, then it's easier to find self-catering apartments on ownersdirect.com etc. However, it's really lovely to get half-board and to be honest, there's not a lot in it costwise, if you contact the hotel direct, and book your own flights. Self-catering means finding supermarkets etc.... You save loads over going through a holiday company. and the only benefit is the easier transfer. However, easy to get taxi and can book online, or ask your hotel to do it for you. Also if you're not tied to school holidays, as you aren't, then the hotels will have plenty of availability..... especially if booking now.

You would need to book the flights yourself. But good operators of self catering accommodation should be able to provide transfers from the airport, arrange skiing lessons and equipment hire and anything else you want. Try looking in the Bavarian Forest - excellent snow conditions but no crowds, and half the price of the big resorts (even those in Austria). The main centre is the Arber mountain and the resort is Bayerisch Eisenstein.

I can honestly recommend the Ski Amad region in Austria for having something for everyone and being suitable for beginners as the lift pass covers a number of different resorts and they are all easily accessible and most have nursery slopes.

I have reasonably priced self-catering apartments in Radstadt, Austria, which is in the centre of the Ski Amad region, you can find out the information on the resorts and the apartments on my web site at http://www.goaustria.co.uk

The apartments are only 850 metres from the lifts, ski school, nursery slope and ski equipment hire so everything is in the one place and easy to sort out without any hassle and the staff there are all very friendly, which is typical of Austria.

I forgot to mention that the shopping Mall is 10 minutes away and has two supermarkets, one being Aldi which is very cheap and a good bottle of wine is under 2 Euros.
