Hi,

My partner and I are looking at going skiing somewhere in France in April of next year on honeymoon. Having not been skiing in April before I would like to make sure (as much as you can these days) that there is enough snow! Currently we have the option of either going in the week commencing 6th April 2008 or 13th April 2008. If you have been skiing in the 2nd or 3rd week in April in the past we would like to hear of your experiences of resorts and snow cover (both good and bad) and any recommendations that you may have. We are currently thinking of France as we can speak French, we are however open to persuasion if anyone has any alternative countries they would like to recommend. I would imagine that this post also assist others also looking at spring skiing next year.

Thank you in advance for your time in reading and responding to this post.

Marv

hi marv

we have been for the last few years at easter to livigno in italy and there has been plenty of snow each time. livigno is 1800 mts above sea level so is quite a high resort and at the beginning of the season they do alot of snow making which puts down a good base and makes it last longer. we have friends who work out there and the season tends to finish around mid may. livigno is a duty free resort, food and drink are cheap and excellent and on the whole is alot cheaper than france for things like lift passes. the only downside is the transfers from milan are long, however we fly to zurich now and go in that way as its half hour shorter and a much nicer, more scenic route. is worth checking out.....let me know if you need any more info on anything as i would be happy to oblige

hi ,as the resort of val d'isere is open until the end of the first week in may this season i would suggest looking there,as one of the snowsurest places in the french alps is should still have excellent snow cover, also april can have heavy snowfall of the if conditions remain cold. Also most resorts become a lot less busy after easter and the prices are more favorable.
many regards

I would take a look at Val Thorens, i stayed there late season a couple of years ago. At around 2300m its europes highest ski resort and so usually still has good snow late into the season especially with most of the slopes being over 2000m.

Being part of the 3 valleys (Val Thorens, Meribel, Courchevel) you can get a pass to cover all of these wich means you have loads of slopes to fall down on. Also there are a lot of snow cannons if the gods decide not to grace the slopes with some real snow.

With lot of the chalets / hotels there you can ski right to your door, which is always nice :)

It can get lively at the bars around Val thorens so be warned. And it does claim to have the largest night club in the alps, which is weird as its all underground but very cool.

i would say that val thorens is a great option although i find as a resort it doesnt have that much character but it is linked to corchevel and meribel mind you crossing to all areas might not be possible that late in the season. Another option is les arcs i have been out there in april last 2 years and the snow was great (infact better than it was much earlier on in the season resort is quite high and i would recommend staying in 1950 chalets are fantastic.

hi ,if you do wish to ski in les arcs at the end of april the resort closes on 26 april 2008,if you go for the last weeks skiing lift passes are usually half price, also if you buy your pass daily ,on the last day they normally waive the fee and you can ski for free, also with the added attraction of probably being some of the only skiers there it is like having your own personal ski resort(i normally take the last skiable week )and as the last postee says you can get fantastic snow at the end of the season(a couple of years ago in the last week there was about two feet of fresh powder up at arc2000 and on the aiguille rouge)
many regards

Hi

You may wish to try the 4 Valleys in Switzerland, Thyon 2000
Mont fort goes above 3000m.

Thyon 2000/Les Collons/Les Masses

You'll have a hard time finding a better place to enjoy winter sports than Thyon-Région having great snow from November to April it is a skiers and boarders dream. The Val d'Herens is located in the heart of the Swiss alps on the Eastern side of the four valleys system one of the largest ski regions in Europe.
The area has over 400 kms of pistes and 100 ski lifts that seamlessly link - Thyon, Veysonnaz, Nedaz and Verbier.

Marv,

Staying with France it has to be either Val Thorens (2300m) which at that time of year will still have links open to the 3 Valley range & Tignes (resort @2100m) linked with Val disere.

Whilst Tignes, like Val Thorens, suffers from having no tree-lines but has the aded benefit of the Glacier and runs off it. Both have the added benefits of possibly the best uplift systems of any resorts in the world

We have skiid both areas early to mid April and had brilliant conditions and experiences with added benefits of the runs / lifts being much 'quieter'.

Statistically good / heavy snowfalls are more likely in these resorts than pre-xmas.

Hi, for the last 3 years we have been to Andorra, in the morning the snow is powder, but tends to soften in the sun around lunch time. According to the ski instructers Andorra tends to get big dump of snow during April.
Soldeu is an amazing place, the ski school is excellent, and the nightlife is very lively.
Not sure if you will have to book independently because alot of package deals to Soldeu tend to finish last week in mar,
We have also been to Italy but much prefer Andorra,
Jenny

I agree Andorra is a great choice. I've been in April and it was great and lots of snow. The Magic Pas is a good choice, it's a 4star hotel in Pas de las Casa only 100m from the slopes. Has a jacuzzi and sauna onsite too.

Hi, well as you can see at the moment there is heaps of snow in many of the French ski resorts. Depending on what ski level you are I can recommend the following:
Resort of Chamonix has great snow cover, at the moment there is almost 600cm of snow on the upper slopes, not bad for April. I have visited Chamonix in the summer and just love it. Try La Ginabelle, which is a MGM residence - http://www.peakretreats.co.uk/chamonix/mgm-apartments/la-ginabelle.htm or if you prefer to have breakfast included try the recently refurbed Le Morgane hotel - http://www.peakretreats.co.uk/chamonix/hotel/le-morgane.htm
Another good resort is Les 2 Alpes, which you can ski the glacier in the summer so obvious that snow is pretty good there! Have a look at Le Cortina - http://www.peakretreats.co.uk/deux-alpes/apartments/le-cortina.htm.
I have just come back from snowboarding in Val Thorens (3 Valleys) and the snow was amazing there! We had a few metres most days (this was middle of March) but there is enough snow there to keep you going until end of April even if it doesnt snow past March. At 2300m resort level its the highest ski resort in Europe. The skiing in the 3 Valleys is fantastic and hard to beat. Snow sure, oh yes! ID personally recommend Hotel Val Thorens - it's right on the piste, right in the centre of town and very nice indeed inside. A perfect honeymoon location - http://skicollection.co.uk/default.cfm/accom.381
Hope this helps!

I'm looking to go to Val D'isere April 2009 on a big family ski holiday with about 25 people. I have been told it is not a resort for beginners? Is this true? We have a mixed group some beginners and some very advanced?

Going on this years snow is April an ok time to go to Val is the snow still good or will there be grass showing??
