Snorkelling

We're off to Beruwela next week, the hotel mentions that there is snorkelling nearby. I'm just wondering if anyone has tried this - we went to Kalutara last year and the sea was way too rough for snorkelling (we went in July last year). If it's not up to much then there's no point us taking our masks etc and can save on the weight...
