I am planning a trip to Phuket and wanted some recommendation on the best hotel and location. I'd like to stay at 4-5 star but most seem far from entertainment and other activites such as JW Marriott. Is the Hilton a better choice than Marriott?

I would like a beach front property with great service and not an older hotel.

Any recommendations of local hotels would be appriciated as well

We stayed in the Merlin Beach Resort in June of this year (2007). Lovely, clean hotel with 3 amazing pools. Next to the beach, although we were recommended not to swim due to the currents. 5 min tax ride to Patong though.

We visited Phuket Town for the day, and in our opinion were so glad we hadn't booked to stay anywhere around there....
