| Could someone enlighten me on the dress code for men on cruises.
I appreciate trousers and shirt/smart polo shirt. but do they have to wear a tie to eat in the dining room. My husband is a Jeans and Joggers type of guy and I have managed to persuade him to do a cruise this year.
Appreciate anyones' help

If you were referring to Thomsons cruises and I think I have seen your posting elsewhere, ties do not have to be worn in the main dining room, and smart casual is the norm. However on Captains Night, the majority of men wear DJ's or suit and tie.
But if you do not want to dress up and your husband likes to relax on holiday, then there is always the self service restaurants as an alternative. There are quite a few people that do not go to the Captain's Dinner, having been to so many ourselves, we have skipped a few too and opted for a relaxed evening.
Hope this helps.

| Hi there....
Not been on the Emerald yet...but we were on the Celebration earlier this year (we go on the Emerald 1/8/08)
My husband is taking a lounge (ie business ) suit....and will wear a sirt and tie for the dinner. Afterwards he will just wear the trousers with the shirt open neck.
OK it is not compulsory to do the formal night....but I personally loved it! It is not very often we ladies get the chance to parade in our finery.....take a suit for your hubby and give it whirl.....if he really wont wear a suit, smart trousers with a shirt and tie would be perfectly accepatable.
We also ahave a teenage son with us.....he will a simple smart shirt and trousers.....which was perfectly acceptable on the Celebration.....
In reality...formal night is an excuse to dress up to the nines ....if you want to....and your photo taken with the Captain.....no one will turn you away if you are smartly dressed.....

| Hi there,
Jeans and joggers in the main dining room is an absolute no.no. You would be ok in the self service restaurant though.

| Hi there,
I have a feeling this is going to be a casual sort of cruise..I don't expect to see too many people dressed up - and to be honest, it seems to me a little silly to bring along a whole suit (which takes up a not inconsiderable part of the space in your suitcase!!) just to wear it for a couple of hours for one dinner? I mean, let's be honest, this IS a budget cruise, after all...I my opinion, a nice summery sort of outfit is more than sufficient (I am, of course, not talking about wife-beater shirts and the likes :-))
