Do they have a strict dress code for the formal dinners on the Calypso?
We have booked the 14 day cruise sept.

I shall be going on 29 September, and have been worried by this! It would seem that a jacket and tie for gents (AND trousers of course!) will do, but for women it's so much vaguer. I think a nice dress or a top and smart trousers should do the trick ....... or that's what I'm counting on, and if I'm not smart enough for other cruisers, that's THEIR problem and not mine! Have a great cruise and do tell us how it goes.

Nothing is strict on the Calypso! It's very comfortable and casual. On formal nights most men wear suit and tie, some wear dinner jackets and bow ties, but those in open neck shirts, or shirt and tie would not be turned away! Only time I have ever seen anyone challenged about dress was a teenager in shorts (that was on Destiny), he was asked to wear long trousers in future.
hope this helps, kate

Hi Bob99. I can confirm what Kate says - things are casual on the Calypso but not casual to the point that there are no standards. The cruise news advises passengers that vest style tops, shorts and baseball caps are not permitted in either the bistro or the dining room at dinner. I have seen people in the bistro who came in from deck after a day in the sun being requested to cover up. They were not turned away it was just suggested to them that they return to their cabin, freshen up and return to eat. Formal nights are not really problematic. Most of the men I saw were only too happy to wear a nice jacket and trousers - chinos or the equivalent. Most of the women dressed up every night. After all every woman likes an opportunity to put on the glad rags. What all the Thomson ships are trying to avoid is lack of basic disregard of hygiene and decorum. On my most recent cruise on the Calypso in June (for which I still have to write a review) there was an older woman who regularly passed through the bistro en route to her cabin in her bikini and a very see through sarong. As she was not intending to eat there it was probably permitted but frowned on during meal times. However on my last day I was passing through at lunch time and there was again an older woman - probably a well preserved 60 year old who was getting tea/coffee and did not even have the courtesy to cover her (far too tiny) bikini with even a see through sarong. It was my last day and I did not linger to see what happened but as this was during lunch service I could hear several passengers pointing her out as I passed. One of the waiters whom I had known for several cruises could see me looking aghast at her and said that it was simply a matter of people not knowing how to behave.

On the Calypso just enjoy yourself. Dress to suit yourself but obey the few rules. There is no such thing as being over dressed. It is the underdressed who make a spectacle of themselves. At the Captain's dinner as long as you are clean, comply with the minimum dress code and comfortable in yourself you will be fine. Its a different matter for women - God the amount of comments made by women who go over the top with elaborate outfits and look down on those of thus in simple good-taste outfits is unbelievable. I just ignore them as I have probably cruised on many more ships and more often than they have and I have always enjoyed myself (generally without disgracing myself - but that is another story and related to the all inclusive package offered by Thomson's). Have a ball in September. I was trying to get back on the Calypso for the last two cruises of the season but work commitments and a really good tour deal on some of the Middle Eastern countries put paid to that.

Regards
Marie
