Flam railway excursion
I just read a review on another site that said that the Thomson excursion from Flam taking in the railway journey was the 'wrong way round', starting with a coach journey and ending with a trip DOWN the railway. Can anyone confirm this as I would rather take the train UP from Flam and there would be little point in spending over 70 pounds on the excursion.

Flam railway excursion
Hello daveCTTR
I have been to Flam three times on Thomson cruises and once on a ferry minibreak to Bergen.
I have never been on the organised excursions but each time went on the Flam railway. It is expensive but cheaper to do independently - see website for details - and you can do a return trip. (Your choice of train may be restricted if there is another cruise ship in at the same time but at least you you go up as well as down - a return trip is recommended)
If you want a round trip, the Norway in a Nutshell ticket, (if timings allow) is worth considering - Flam railway to Myrdal, main line train to Voss, bus to Gudvangen then ferry back to Flam - the tourist information office at Flam has details.

Thanks for the advice. I checked out the port of Flam site and the Celebration is the only ship in port that day and it does not seem too far to the station. The Flambahn return fare is NOK 310 which is approx 30 pounds which is expensive but still a lot cheaper than the ships excursion. I reckon a gentle walk to the station to catch the 11.00am train will be ideal and even better if we get 10 10ths cloud at 500 feet there is no need to waste money on the train fare.

The station is approximately 5 minutes walk from the ship - the booking office is in the same building as the Tourist Information. If Thomson Celebration is the only ship in then you should tie up at the quay and hopefully disembarkation will not be by tender.

Hi Dave CTTR
When are you going on your trip? We are doing Magic of Iceland sailing on 24th July. We like to be "independent travellers" so perhaps we could join up on trips.

I am not going until September, too long to wait and the last Norway cruise of the season, hope we don't get blizzards!. I have booked Iceland for next year though.

Hi Dave,
You can do this tour both ways depending on which one you choose, both are equally as good.
You can also do it on your own, but do expect some lines at the booking desk, which ahas been said is less than 5 mins away from dock.
IMO a ships tour gives far better details than DIY, but each to his/her own.
Also take a ride on the trolley from about 9 Krona this takes you on a short tour round Flaam. to the left from the tourist office by the white canopy.
