We have booked for the Aegian cruise leaving Corfu on 30th May and am relieved the ship seems to have had a re-fit of sorts, so thanks to tart6000 for asking the question and for all the replies.
A few questions of my own are, what is the onboard currency - GBP?
What is the draught beer?
Anyone else booked on this cruise?

Rock on ;-)

Hi Sasher

On board currency of all Thomson ships is GBP, and is operated on a cashless system. You are issued with a plasitc card similar to a credit card and this is used for all on board purchases including the tours.
You can either put your credit or debit card across reception on the first day, or pay cash deposit up front. It's easier to use Credit/Debit cards because you don't have to queue at the end of the voyage to pay.

The beer is Boddingtons which used to be draught, but they are using cans now it seems, but still, with 'the widget' I find it is ok, but of course it isn't quite a pint.....!

from what ive read on a cruise webiste, the emerald (topaz) is by far the oldest in the fleet, coming up to 50 years old.

I dont know what you mean by (Topaz) as this was an entirely different ship that left the fleet some years ago and is now working as a peace ship in the middle/far east. But yes..the emerald really is an old lady.

Hi, read on another site that Emerald was taken out of service in October for refit and will be back sailing in April. Anyone doing the Pearls of the Aegean on 13th June?

Thomsons do not claim full ownership on any of their liners. They are all chartered (and have been) chartered from Louis, Premier and Epirotiki amongst others.

The emerald is fully owned by Louis.

She has had a very interesting past actually.

In 1958 she entered service for 'Grace Line' as the Santa Rosa replacing 1 of 2 pre war ships with the same name which sailed from New York- Central America then transferred to Prudential Greece in 1970 and then laid up the following year along with sister ship which entered service at the same time known as Santa Paula.

Santa Paula ended up as a floating hotel in kuwait whereas Santa Rosa (Emerald) was ditched and laid up in the USA for 20 years before being sold to Lelakis Group in 1990 and sent to greece for rebuilding as a cruise ship.

She reappeared, barely recognisable, as the Regent Rainbow for Regency Cruises in 1992, although surprisingly she retained her steam turbine engines. Regency Cruises were declared bankrupt soon afterwards.
In 1995 she joined the Thomson fleet and was their 4th chartered ship and is the longest serving liner with the company.

Hope that helps a bit

Hi Tart6000

Have just read in Cruise News that Thomsons are getting rid of the Emerald in October. Any views on this?

Yep, I did mention this before..and to the user that doubted me on it. I told you so ;)

News also is that TSS The Topaz (ex Thomsons now Peaceboat) has been sold for scrap. She will finish her current peaceboat voyage which ends in Yokohama, Japan on April 28th before setting sail to a ship breaking yard (possibly Alang) in india where her life comes to an end. Very sad news indeed.

Its a shame really,
though based on how popular thomson seem to be with cruises is it a matter of time before its found out what the next ship will be and who it will have come from previously.

Yeah they will probably replace her with something, my bet is maybe another adults only ship or something around the same size. They should bring back the ever popular AI cruise, Topaz was the best.

Somebody has recently told me that this is the last season for the Emerald. Thomson are retiring it. Can't see that they would do a refit if that is the case. We'll see soon enough.
