| Mrs D and myself have just been on the Destiny, the Med Renaissance itinery for our first ever cruise and thoroughly enjoyed it, we read the forum before going and found answers to our questions without having to post, many thanks to the regular 'posters' whose answers to others were a great help.
In the spirit of 'putting something back in', if anyone wants an answer from the point of view of a first timer who has recently been on the ship please ask away
Cheers

| Hi Harry,
Personally, I left my tux at home and took my suit with a bow tie and dress shirt, but I would say there was a good mix of men in Dress suits /suits and those in Blazers or jackets with shirt and tie, it is a good enjoyable evening and not at all 'stuffy', I,m sure you will enjoy it and not feel underdressed if you choose your blazer. In fact I am envious that you will have 2 Gala dinners to enjoy ! Have a great time!
Cheers
Chris

| I took a suit and tie, and my wife wore an evening dress, and felt there was a good mix of tuxedo's and suits etc. We only dressed like that the once for the captains cocktail party.
We opted for the first sitting of dinner and went straight on to the deck for the sailings party (we set sail at midnight from Palma). It lasted for quite some time (and one or two of the guests paid for it the next day) It was windy and the sea a little rough. The party was brilliant, and I can thoroughly recommend it.
Enjoy your cruise.

My husband and two girls have just returned from our week aboard the Destiny and hubby wore a suit and tie for the Captains Gala. In hindsight he wishes he had taken a tux, not because he felt out of place in his suit but every gent who wore one looked good in it, no matter what their size, shape age etc. I think he got a bit carried away with the moment. Chris D was right, there was a good mix.
We only ate at the Seven Seas on the Captains Gala night as with two children we preferred to eat when we were hungry at the Lido Cafe. However, on that one occasion it was lovely to get dressed up and have your photos taken, the girls loved it too (10 and 7). Make sure you are photographed on both floors as the offer different backdrops. We had a lovely sunset background and a traditional staircase background, both we bought and they were lovely momentos of the night. Go with whatever you feel comfortable with John, but think on this, how often do you get invited to a Captains Gala night, twice for you, go on make your wife happy, wear a tux on one of them, when you get the photographs you'll be pleased you did!!
Have a great 2 weeks. I so jealous as I know what sort of a time you're going to have.
Enjoy your cruise, you will have an absolutely fabulous time, two weeks eh, take some expandable waistline trousers with you as well......just in case. Wear your tux on the first gala night as that's the second day and at least you'll not of put on too much weight by then!!!!!!

| Hello Chris,
I am going on the Destiny in September this year and would appreciate any advice or guidance you can provide with regards to travelling from the ports. My wife and I love the adventure (and cost) of using public transport but are aware it may not be feasable from every port. Can you advise? This is my first cruise, approximately 8 weeks to go and really looking forward to it especially after joining holiday watchdog and reading all the positive reviews.
Cheers,
Mirg

| Hi Mirg,
I am assuming you are going on the renaissance itinery, we actually only used public transport in Villefranche, a nice walk along the seafront takes you to the train station where you can catch the train to Nice or Monte Carlo, we chose the latter for less than 5E each. after buying your ticket there is a machine on the platform to validate your ticket.
We took a short wine tasting excursion instead of going to Pisa/Florence to save our energies for Rome and spent the rest of the time looking around Marina di carrara (the port to replace Livorno) which is an easy walk from the port.
For Rome we did the 'Rome on your own' excursion which is in effect a coach that drops you off next to the Vatican and picks you up around 6 hours later, we later heard it was quite easy (and cheaper!) to catch a train but i cant comment from experience unfortunately.
Sorry I couldnt be more help , but i,m sure there will be others on this site that will chip in useful info.
I'm sure you will have a great time, we were a bit unsure before we went, but were talking about the 'next' time after a few days.
Have a great trip,
Chris

| Hey Chris
I'll be on the Destiny 4 wks today, yipee ! ! ! ! ! I'm more a trousers sort of person rather than skirts but will splash out for something dressey for the Captain's Cocktail Party ! My query is how dressey were the ladies ? Was it mid length, full length dresses/skirts ?? You may not have paid too much attention but perhaps you could ask Mrs D ?? I'm getting really excited now and through the forum have got in touch with a very nice couple & their family that will be on the same cruise, so hopefully we'll get to meet up !
Your comments would be much appreciated :-)

Hi LMG,
It would be quite acceptable for you to wear smart trousers with sparkley top, a full evening gown, cocktail dress, skirt and top infact almost anything that you would normally wear going out for dinner.
The problem is not the lovely ladies, it's us scruff bags, your men, England football shirt maybe ok for buying beer but for dinning out maybe we should make the effort and at least shave. LOL
Have a great cruise.

| Hi Tenpin
Thank you so much for your reply. You've put my mind at ease - here was me thinking I'd have to go out and buy a ball gown/cocktail dress that I would only have on me the once ! ! Its good to know that I won't feel out out place in my smart trousers and dressey tops !
Thanks again :-) LMG

| Hello LMG,
I can't add much to tenpins reply, Mrs D wore a cocktail dress but there was a good mix of styles including many ladies in trousers and dressy tops. It is a great night and good fun, i guarantee you will enjoy it!
Have a great time!

Thanks for the reply. Sounds like it will be a great experience, I can't wait. Even happier now that I have a choice to wear trousers if I don't see anything else I like !

| Hi Chantelle welcome aboard the forum . yes its true most folk in my opinion are aged 40-60 on the cruises ive been on.but the other age groups are represented too, over 60's and under 40's ,under 30's and of course teenagers.do not worry there will be lots of teenagers on board and within the first 24 hours you will have formed a group and probably never see your parents all week, which i reckon could be a good plan on their part. and yes get dressed up for the captains cocktail party ,its all great experience for you , cruising is not like any other holiday ,its better . have a great time
kind regards quizzer
