Dress codes are suggested and not mandatory. You could even wear a t shirt and jeans if you wished to do so (which some do).

Hi, I don't wish to cause you a problem but last year we were on a Thompson cruise and on the evening of the Captains dinner we saw the crew were refusing entrance to the main dining room, to men who did not wear a tie and jacket . It is ok though to dress relaxed for the buffet restaurant so you will have a choice. Enjoy the cruise.

We are just back from our Easter cruise and we were second sitting for dinner. We noticed that there were quite a few without jacket and tie for the first dinner sitting but there were a only 2 or 3 men without jacket and tie at the second sitting. The vast majority of men had dress suits on with the remaining men in jacket and tie or suits. To be honest I think you would feel out of place without the tie. There were also a few empty seats in the dining room that night where people had decided to use the lido restaurant instead of dressing up. We were on a table of 11 and all of us including our 17 year old son were in dress suits and it was a really memorable occasion for all of us.

In our party the men wore shirts and trousers no jacket or tie most evenings, however on the formal evenings they wore suits and ties for the meal then took them off later,I suppose it is what you are used to.Have a great cruise we have been on The Destiny for the past two years and have booked again for next year ,its a wonderful way to holiday waking up in a new place every day.

On all the cruises I have been on (even the budget ones) people make an effort for the Captain's night. This includes ties for the men. I have heard fellow cruises laugh at men in dinner jackets while they are swilling pints at the pool bar just as early dinner stilling is about to start. Later on these same men are still jeering at the properly dressed men but its more out of mortification at their own lack of decorum. Dressing up once on a cruise is no hardship but the embarrassment of finding yourself underdressed and the topic of gossip must be dreadful. Even worse are those who dress up to the nines and then, once dinner is over, feel the need to remove their dinner jackets/suits. This marks them out among the staff, crew as fellow passengers as people who feel uncomfortable dressed up and belonging to a particular social class - unfortunate but I have heard it commented upon several times. To make it worse the wives/partners are usually delighted to dress up and end the evening with this man who can't keep his jacket or tie on. The snobbery has gone out of most cruises but there is still a sense of the "right thing to do" or in this case "wear".

Hi
Just got back last night and there were several men without ties on our dinner sitting. Just what you feel happy with as long as you are quite smart.

On the special nights ‘Gala & Captains dinner' you can be stopped entering the DR if considered not properly dressed, tie & jacket.
However the other nights are getting more relaxed as far as dress code is concerned.

But come on guys does it require that much effort for you to dress up once or twice a week, considering your good lady has surely made the effort to look lovely.

Be PROUD she looks nice and do the same.

Hi,on the subject of the Captains Dinner, just thought id boast (cos i can!) lol! was on Destiny 29 march-5 april
and received an invite for my wife and i to dine with the Staff Capt at his table on 'Gala Evening'. This began with a champagne reception for us and 2 more couples then we were escorted into the Seven Seas restaurant to Mr Soulis' table where we were waited on by about 4 waiters on our small table.Staff Capt Soulis is a really nice guy and not at all 'stuffy' or aloof as i thought he might have been. After dinner we were escorted to Can-Can lounge and to our reserved seats for the evenings show. The next day we received tickets for a tour of the ships bridge which was very interesting. Ive no idea why,out of 1000+ passengers,we were chosen for this privelege but it was brilliant and thanks must go to Lisa-Jane,social host on Destiny and Staff Capt Soulis for making this possible. All in all a great night and a brilliant cruise.

Hi I was on that sailing. Wonder why hubby and I weren't asked. Only joking. Maybe he saw how much wine we could drink.

Hi trishchis so what do you think of the ship and the cruise then? This was my 2nd Thomson cruise after 'Spirit' in 03 and after reading the reviews we was a bit worried about it being a booze cruise or 'Butlins at sea' but couldnt have been more wrong!! I thought it was brilliant and my wife wants to go on another in late Oct,she is converted!! It makes me mad when people pay £450 or so and then expect the QM2 or something like that Would be interested to hear your opinions if you would like to reply cheers.

hi to you do you know i couldnt agree more how can any body moan about this cruise you can have two thomson cruises for the price of some of the others and im sure they cant be that different ive read many reveiws comparing the destiny to butlins and ive been to butlins and its nothing like that at all ,i think its a great family holiday and it attracts agreat set of people i think you could feel a bit on show on some of the other cruises and because we have kids we it just had every thing for us . maybe when our kids are older we will try some of the others but for now thomson will more than do for us. its great value for money last year we had 1 week in tenerife 5 star hotel same time march /april and it cost more.

Hi Mims,

Just want to say that while we think Thomson are one of the friendliest and certainly on our holiday plans at least once a year, they are not always the cheapest.

Just take a look at the two below to prove my point, not that I particularly like Cunard I think the better cruise would be Thomson's, certainly with children.

!4 nights 15 Nov Queen Victoria outside cabin £ 1549 12 nights aboard two nights hotel

14 nights Spirit April 09 outside cabin £ 1559 Red sea and hotel.

With cruising you really have got to do your homework prices change daily on the net, picking the right time can save you hundreds.

Hi - I certainly found Thomsons to be the cheapest. It only cost hubby and I £360 each for the cruise, flying from our regional airport which was stansted. When I looked for a late deal the week before I couldn't believe that this was the cheapest holiday coming up. Had to persuade hubby as he was not very keen about a cruise, but at that price!!!!! I have to say we had a wonderful time and all that 24 hour food which was delicious. Value for money or what. Yes it may not be the most luxurious ship around and cabins were small, but we were aware of this before we went as a friend had cruised the year before on the spirit. Everywhere was spotlessly clean and our maid in the cabin worked her socks off. I was a little concerned about having to share a table with strangers, as we are used to staying at 4 and 5 star hotels where everything is a bit more private, but our evening companions, edna, gordon, anne and alan were fantastic, so much so we were always the last to leave the restaurant in the evening and I wouldn't have missed being entertained by our waiters for the world. Great holiday all round - apart from the rough day at sea on the way to Morocco.
