Hi we are going on Destiny jul 10-17 '08 and 1 of the ports of call is Barcelona.
I was just wondering if anyone can tell me if it is a huge walk from the port to the famous sights of the city eg Sagrada Familia,Barri Gotic,Las Ramblas and the Gaudi Park.
We dont really want to pay for a Thomson tour if we can do the sights easily ourselves
Also any other tips on sightseeing in any of the ports of call will be welcome
we dont need any info on the Destiny itself as we know the ship having only cruised on her early April.
any tips and info on the itinerary will be much appreciated

Hi

Just beside the dock is the Touist busstop. It is a hop on- hop off bus which takes you to all the main attractions. the cost last year was €20 per person. The are three different roues and the one ticket does all. The bus routes interconnect in a couple of diffferent places. You also receive a book of discount vouchers which are very useful. So I would not bother with an offical Thompson's tour of Barcelona. Have a great time - Barcelona is a great city

Hi- it is a huge walk to Sagrada Familia and Parc Guell. The Ramblas and Gothic quarter are very close to where the ship docks (hopefully!- some dock further out and need a shuttle bus to the Ramblas, but I've never experienced that with Island or Thomson)
There is a metro at the top of the Ramblas (ship is at the bottom!) or a HOHO bus. We found it easier to walk a bit away from the port area, get taxis to Parc Guell, Sagrada Familia, then back to top of Ramblas. Walked from there and explored Gothic quarter before going back to ship. Ramblas seems to be livelier in the afternoon (watch your valuables!) and you end up close to the ship.

Don't know what your other ports of call are I'm afraid.

As this is our first cruise and we are doing the jewels of the Med departing Thursday 7 August - has anyone out there done an excursion to Capri from Naples? Do Thomsons have an organised trip to Capri or is it just Sorrento and Pompei? Would really like to see Capri but would not feel too confident about doing our own trip having heard scary stories about Naples!

Hello Birdie. We have docked twice in Naples and have found it to be a great city. I am not the bravest person in the world but felt very safe there. It is very noisy and very busy but great. There is a furnicular railway just of the main street which takes you right to the top and the view is amazing. Where we docked was just next to the booths where you buy tickets for Sorrento and Capri. Check the return times as we made a mess of it and did not much have much time at either, but it was still great.
