Med Cruise 30th Aug

Postby mummykins on Mon Aug 20, 2007 11:07 pm

I am going with thomson destiny and would appreciate some hints/tips on what to expect on our first cruise.
What are the excursion prices like? not sure if confident enough to go alone!!
Can anyone tell me if toiletries are supplied in the cabins( trying to make more space for clothes)
Any idea what the soft drinks prices are, did see a reply about this but couldnt get to see the link.
Any advice gratefully received.....

\okay here goes

Hello Mummy, ages since I said that, lol, welcome to HW hope you enjoy the forum.

Loads of info in the cruise section. All toiletries are supplied along with all towels, face cloths and the like.

You can check all excursion prices on Thomson site once you have your booking ref No.

Let me know where you are going and will give you info on whether to do ships tour or how to do your own thing.

Soft drink about 1 and other drink about the price of your local, tea & coffee, water free 24/7 not bottled water though thats extra.

thanks
we are going on the mediterannian renaissance, visiting villefrance, livorno, civitecchia, alghero and palamos (didnt check the spellings) Have rec'd our tickets and the tours can be up to 75 each which I thought was quite pricey, would love to see Rome and Pisa for the leaning tower, rests of the sites not too fussed.
Have booked an inside cabin for the first trip, will see how it goes?
Thanks for the info on toiletries, so dont need to take any then? shampoo, shower gel etc?

Hi,

I just checked the links and they're still working. Highlight each one individually, then right click, copy, then click in your browser (where it says address at the top of your screen), and right click, paste. Then hit enter. (sorry if there's another reason you can't get it to work, I know some people don't know how to do this).

Hello Mummykins,

While all these can be done on your own, & many members will say it's easy, I would personally not do so if you are anyway not sure.

Luckily for the two that are most important to you I would definitely select the ships tour that most suits you. With both Rome(Villefranche) & Livorrno(Pisa) are a good distance from where you dock, & by going with the ship you know (a) they will drop you off & pick you up at the same place & (b) in most cases they will count you back on to the coach & the ship will wait if that coach is late. Unlike if you use trains or taxis.

Rome is magical & the most expensive tour is the best, however you may find it better to just take the cheapest option, just the coach to Rome centre, get a look around then return for a long weekend sometime. This coach will drop you off & and in general you can walk to most sights in the given time.
Beware of pickpockets and bag snatchers on motor bikes in Rome.
Pisa is another place that deserves more time, however as this is mainly the tower then the cheapest tour that takes that in is the answer.

The rest, just walk off ship go outside dock gates and pick up the hopper sightseeing bus. About 12 Euros.

Yes, shampoo & shower gel are freely available in your cabin, may not be your usual brand but it does the job.

Heard lots of bad reports about Thompson Cruises. Blocked and over flowing toilets on the Celebration, Dirty cutlery on the Destiny. Floating holiday camps.

I have not been on the myself, but know lots of people who have.

I have been on the Island Star. Excellent ship, staff, cleanliness and top service. I have never felt so spoilt on a holiday before. They really make you feel special.

Good luck with the cruise, I hope it goes well. Onegood thing i can say, is that it is great waking up everyday in a different place. Very exciting. I hope you have a good time.
