| I was just looking at one of the reviews ( The Referee s ) and it said about alot of walking around Rome.
My husband has a problem with his leg so after walking for a bit it is painful.
We are desperate to do Rome, can anyone give us any advise on this trip and the walking situation. Do we get breaks? can he sit a bit?
Any advise from The Ref or anyone else will be welcome. Thanks

| Hi there
We too were on the same cruise as The Ref (we actually bumped into each other at the end of our cruise, what are the odds on that!) and had also booked an excursion to Rome. After talking to several people who had done this excursion on previous cruises, they all commented that it was a 'full on' walk about tour and as we had two children (one who needs to wear splints) I had serious doubts so cancelled it.
The Rome excursion is the day after the Florence port of call. We did do Florence as it is my dream destination and I'm glad I did but the kids really suffered in the heat as it was 37 degrees. It was about a 2 hour walk about and about an hour's free time which we spent in shade having drinks and a pizza. When we returned to the ship the kids were shattered, my ankles were extremely swollen and my husband and I were both drained.
Luckily we had cancelled the Rome excursion, as on the day it was 43 degrees and by all accounts hard going. We didn't surface from our cabin on this day until 11.30 a.m. due to our exhaustion from Florence so would have struggled to even get up on the day. Bear this in mind if you do intend to do Florence as well....Rome is the next day.
There are other alternatives, you can do a coach tour of all the sights in which you don't even get off the bus, but personally I'd of hated seeing the Trevi Fountain from the inside of a coach and not being able to get out and throw my coins in!!
The heat can be unbearable but I'm sure if you find it hard going, discuss this with your guide. You are issued with a map on the coach and maybe you could miss a few of the sites and meet up at a site further along on the tour, this way you could go along at your own leisurely pace and maybe miss some of the sites you're not particularly bothered about seeing!! Just a thought.
You'll have a fabulous time whatever you choose to do.
Enjoy.

| Thanks. We wanted to do Florence too and i did notice that they were next to each other!!!
We will have to have a think. We would be gutted not to go and really don't want to be in the coach all the time. Do you know if it is a slow walk or more a route march????
I can't believe you bumped into the Referee. How did you know it was him/ her. I have been emailing someone i met on this site. We are both going on the same cruise!! Its a small world ( except in Rome when you are walking in the heat with 2 moaning kids and a husband limping!!!)
6 weeks tomorrow!

| Hi Shippletts
Do as Mrs Richie advises go for the excursion and just take it at your own pace and see the most important bits. and catch the tour up at a point were everyone meets, or borrow a wheelchair ( thats if you can get him in one.) We were taken around at a slow pace it was brilliant but ever so hot, so do take cover with you or you will burn. It is a long day but worth it. I still look at the video and ljust ook at the Trivi, just marvelous.
When we went their was no air conditioning working on the coach, and all the courier could say was oh I sorry, but everyone was going berserk and one lady nearly passed out.

| hi,
We did the 'Rome on your own' excursion , we were dropped right next to St Peters Basilica, we walked across the square where we caught the open topped red bus, this does a circular tour of the city and you can hop on and off to suit yourself .If I remember correctly they are about every 20 mins and take about 2 to 2.5 hours to do a circuit. There is a commentary in English, you just plug in the provided earphones and choose the correct language. I know it stops near Trevi fountain and right next to the coloseum, cant quite remember where else as we got off at the coloseum and walked back to St Peters for the coach back.
The red bus cost 16e for an adult , sorry but not sure how much a child ticket is.
have fun

| Thanks . We will just take it slowly and see what the guide says. it would be a shame to miss Rome when you have gone all that way!
