| An official decision on smoking hasnt been passed by maritime law, but some operators are choosing to have 1 or 2 bars smoking only, and its banned in restaurants and main caberet bars. Thomson on the other hand is planning to go totally smoke free at the back end of the year. You try light a fag on deck when at sea and its gusting a gale.

| An operator did try a smoke free cruise, and ended up pulling the plans as it caused mayhem apparently. All i can say is keep an eye out.

As John said there have been at least three smoke free cruises that failed, and rightly so. 25% of the cruise market smoke.
For many years now smoking has been banned in restaurants and theaters, fairly recently in most bars and casinos. it has been commom knowledge that the Port side of the ship was for smokers. and non-smokers could roam freely down the other side without fear of coming in contact with smoke. surely this is enough to satisfiy all. unless us non-smokers failed to learn how to read at school.
However I believe that it will still be allowed on certain open decks, as the law states I quote 'open areas' if this is breached then surely your human rights will be affected.
Also I believe that it should be made perfectly clear before booking that ships may be smoke free, I did read somewhere that Thomson was thinking of this but as yet no solid statement has been issued.

| Last time i read, one of fred olsens ships..either the boudicca or braemar is completely smoke free, and they have done sufficient advertising. Im with tenpin on they should make it clearer for sure.

Yeah John,
You could be right, mind you not surprised on Fred Olsens ships,
I've seen bigger skiffs on the Thames than Freds so called 'ships' no room to light up on them one would think.

| thanks ,all
I perhaps thought they might have got round it as it was your "place of redsidence"just like hotels .cause i know there are some hotel chains which still have smoking bedrooms. Ive no objection to not smoking in restaurants ect but was abit concerned about only being alliwed to smoke in one small area i imagine that would get pretty cramped as Im sure im not the only smoker booked.Maybe you'll keep me uptodate if any thing further comes to your attention. thanks

| Smoking has been banned in the UK becuase it has been proven that passive smoking damages the health of none smokers. Fact. this is why employers are now not allowed to subject employess to fag smoke as it would leave them open to countless lawsuits. This should be no different on cruise liners. So for those that persist to smoke please have the common decency to do it in private way from non smokers who generally find it abhorrent, especially those who suffer from astma and other respiratory ailments. Have a bloody heart!!
A recent post states that smoking has been banned in all internal areas on the Thomson Spirit. If this is the case three cheers to Thomson!!!
Moderator.
This is not a debate about the issues of smoking, this is a holiday question about a cruise already booked, please do not turn this into a pros & cons about the smoking issue.

| Hi all,
Just back from Destiny (will post review soon) - smoking policy is:
As from May 1st 2008, smoking is NOT permitted inside the ship at all, only portside of open decks.
I hope this clears up any confusion.
Rachel.

| I would have thought it depends on the flag flying over the stern, I myself gave up smoking before the ban and have now started to look like a football, my good lady did not and looks great. I think there should be places where you can smoke and if others who do not like it can go to the smoke free area. I join the Destiny tomorrow, and having spent twentyfive years at sea look foreward to this with intrest. I think it still comes down to the old saying you get what you pay for...and if there is no smoking someone will pay

| Sorry eh1 but I have just collected my travel document for the Celebration and on page 25 it says:
"Smoking - Smoking is only permitted in strictly designated areas of the open deck. Smoking is not permitted anywhere inside the ship."
As there has been no press announcement of Thomsons relaxing their smoking policy I would think your brochure 'relaxation' is merely a missprint or the latest brochure being modified from the wrong previous version, it happens all the time in the publishing trade.
