| These are our views on a recent holiday to the Hotel Hvar in Jelsa. Our outward flight with Thomas Cook was delayed for three and half hours but we were told that our rep from Balkan would there to meet us on arrival in Split. There was no one to meet us from Balkan! we eventually found a Thomas Cook rep who directed us to a coach to take us to the port where we were then left to find our own way to Jelsa, again we found a boat which apparently was intending to take us but there was no one looking for us, so how we were supposed to know, I have no idea. After leaving home at 3am, we eventually arrived in Jelsa at 7.30pm. There was no traditional 'welcome pack'and when we arrived at the hotel our luggage was dumped by the bus driver and we were left. We not contacted by or see a Balkan rep. at all during the two weeks.
Jelsa is beautiful, a lovely little square with cafes (try cafe Splendid for good English tea) and bars. We saw two very good local concerts. We went on several outings using local transport, boat trips are available but not sold by force - you have to look for agents - we found Atlas to be the best.
The Hotel Hvar itself is nice, although in need of more updating (some has been done)The food (all inclusive) was always edible but oh so boring - the same thing every day for 14 days, the all inclusive bar was very limited and it was impossible to get a cup of tea or coffee after a meal unless one paid for it! We requested on one occasion a packed lunch only to be told that this was not available because we were TWO MINUTES out of time. When we left yesterday morning at 6.30 am we were given the offer of a coffee - no breakfast, although staff were putting this out in the dining room and were given a packed lunch of 2 stale sandwiches and 2 apples. On arrival at the airport at about 10.15 am for a 12.30 flight we told that the flight was delayed, we were eventually boarded and sat on the tarmac for one hour and twenty minutes - we were given a glass of water. We had not ordered food en flight so could not have a meal.
We arrived home at 5.30 pm having had nothing to eat or drink since the previous evening apart from a pack of crisps and a glass of water.
The fact that we had a very good holiday was because we got ourselves out and about, using local transport. It was not due to Balkan Holidays and we most certainly would not recommend them or the service to anyone.
