advice wanted please on where i stand!

Postby natalie1 on Mon Jun 19, 2006 3:40 pm

Hi all, i'm wondering if anyone has any advice or information on building works at hotels? I've booked a holiday and have now received a letter saying that there willl be work on the sewage and water pipes at the hotel for the duration of our holiday, the work will be starting early in the morning and having noisy machinery going until the evening, they have offered us a change of hotel which i really don't want  . Am i entitled to my money back or to transfer my holiday to another date? Any information would be really appreciated.
thanks Natalie

Hi Natalie

My advice is MOVE and do it at the tour operator's expense. Just write or e-mail them and state that you expect the same standards/facilities as the hotel you originally booked-then you are covered if it all goes pear-shaped.

The reason I say this is, we recently came back from Madeira where there was 3 building sites close to our apartments and it was hell!!! We had to pay to move though. It did spoil our holiday. Noisy, dusty and not relaxing at all.

Hope all goes well for you.

Sorry Natalie, mis-read your message. YES-you can ask the company for a full refund. We did it last year because of a change in flight departure date. (Thomas Cook).

You could move the holiday but you should not be charged with ammendment fees, as it is their problem.

3 options for you-hope it works out.

Hey Natalie,

The holiday company are only legally bound to inform you of the building works and if requested (by you), transfer you to a property of the same price.

If they offer a more expensive property, they can actully ask you to pay the difference. Most companies, as a show of good faith, will not ask this.

There is absolutely no requirement for them to refund you the cost of the holiday or to change the dates.

Again, some charter companies may do this as a sign of good faith - but it is by no means a legal requirement.

I hope the situation works out for the best for you.

In the past, I have had clients moved for this reason who ended up getting a much better property than they originally booked.
